Small skirmishes? Kill Team. One box is enough to get some easy Kill Team in.

Poke around your local shop and ask if they have the assassin board game lying around. The Space Hulk board for that game makes for an excellent Kill Team board.

Kill Team, HoR. This is a polished and well regarded rules set that builds off the half baked GW version. Either way, Kill team is the way to go, and don't feel pressured to increase your game sizes. The game works well at smaller scales.

If you're just starting, simply play with what you've got first. Try and be fair, don't take 2 dreadnoughts vs just guardsmen or something.

Once you get some stuff, 500-750 points is when you can start making lists. There's fan rules for other play modes, but for learning stick to the basics first.

We saw that last saturday, same is true for bodyguards. You can now have relentless broadsides too.
The real hidden gem is taking gun drones on vehicles, disembarking and then using them to get 3 units shooting the same target for +1 BS when using the tau big formation.

Other neat stuff, like being able to turbo boost/run and still shoot normally when using the hunter cadre

It is, but you gotta get it across the field. I take a sorcerer that's unmarked and try to get endurance on biomancy for the FNP roll. Tends to ensure they get across the field, helps to have other units harassing the enemy while you do it, such as maulerfiends, spawn, bikes, helldrakes, ect.

Total = 860 points

Should I bump the command squad to 6 bikers?

Anything to change with any units loadout?

Another Anon already suggested Kill Team which is good for learning the basics, but you'll want to scale it up a bit quickly. For small skirmishes with each other? 500 points will do.

500 points is basically a troop choice or two, an HQ and an elite/heavy/fast. Grab a battleforce if you can but either way it shouldn't run you past £70 and will actually be way less if you spring for a Dark Vengeance set between the two of you.

After you're comfortable with the game look through your codex, find out what you like the look of (and what will help your army) and add them in. 1000 points is generally considered the quick friendly game mode.

Maxing out the command squad is a good idea, alongside giving it an apothecary and champ, they're so useful they're almost required.

A grenade launcher could be a good idea too if you don't like the nerdy blue marines that much, the banner is only worth bringing if you have points spare though it is useful to have.

General tactics with the ravenwing (command squad especially) is to lay down the plasma, assault in and crump stuff but hope to leave one or two gits left in the enemy unit, tank their hits in the opponents turn then either win combat through killing them or hit & run away, allowing you to do the same thing to that unit again or move on to destroying something else in your turn.

Well just make sure you have the guns to kill enemy elite stuff and tanks, you should add what you want with that in mind.

An apothecary is useful to have when you can add him.

Please note if you go full shooting, anything that reaches melee will end you.

Is that for 1000 points? Yeah I'd slap at least another couple of bikes onto the command squad and then use the few points left for an Apothecary and maybe some plasma. Assuming that you're banging Sammael in there it'll be a hard unit to shift.

The problem is, you're not really saving money with them like you used to. You're better off getting the models individual.

Yeah the main site doesn't do most battleforces anymore but you can still find them with third parties (both physical stores or webstore) like: http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/353-warhammer-40000

Actually the general rule of thumb is to always check with third party sellers for 40k stuff first. They may not have what you want but they'll usually sell at a 15%-30% discount which is pretty significant even if you don't get a battleforce.

His ability wouldn't even be good if it was just some banner that was 50 points, nevermind the fact that CSM aren't good in the first place, so 160 is lol are you serious tier, lol are you playing the same game as me tier, might as well not take your models out of the case tier. It's a unit that dies easily, costs an assload of points, can be easily tarpitted, and is slow as shit, and Fabius himself is a T4 marine with no invulnerable save, no AP, and some shitty pistol.

tl;dr that is a really, really bad idea, autolose against anything but equally shit fluff lists

Question about this fuckin' book:

It says my demagogue can have a Devotion and be an Ordnance Tyrant. In The Purge detachment, anyone that can take a covenant to Nurgle or Devotion to Nurgle must. But there is literally no Devotion to Nurgle rule in the book, just a covenant to Nurgle.

So can an Ordnance Tyrant lead The Purge detachments?

Devotion to Nurgle is the Demagouges special rule that kicks in when he has a covenant of nurgle that lets him take plague zombies and blight drones.

Also, you aren't forced to upgrade to nurgle. it only says that you're not allowed to take covenants other than nurgle.

Eldar here. Easily.

Windrider Scatter Laser Max is far superior to a Wraithhost at 1000 points. Half of his army should never even touch you, you are 3x his range and 3x his speed.

I'm thinking at 1000 points he can't afford very many serpents, if any at all. Avoid the WK until Crimsons show up

Also spend the other 7 points dammit.

Not the Anon you're looking for but it really depends of what this guy is packing. Assuming he's stuffed in the full-fat cheese of Wraithknights out the wazzoo then I don't see an easy way that you take him. Your best bet is to use superior mobility to kite and grab objectives. Wraiths don't have good anti-air though (and you have that sick cover save) so your Crimson Hunters should be able to strip wounds.

I think you would be glad if you took a better Weapon on the Vyper. Even something else that will for sure pluck a WG out of a squad every turn or a wound off a WK or WL. Granted it probably won't survive, but the further away it is, the better chance it has.

Tau just got a pretty big update and are way less expensive than Krieg, especially point-for-point. Unless you go for a Krieg tank company you'll have less to paint and model with Tau. The blueberries do require a bit of effort to get some synergy going with markerlights and buff-commander, but I think they're very rewarding!

So what's the least faggoty way to run a Wraith Host allied with Dark Eldar? I want to play Dark Eldar, but I also want to be able to keep up with the Tau/Space Marine/Necron players at my LGS...so I was thinking of allying a Wraith Host for now until DE get their 8th edition codex. I really don't want to run 15 D-Scythes because that's morally reprehensible, but I also hear that running Wraithblades are a waste of time/money/everything. Has anybody tried running Wraithblades in Raiders? Is 5 Scythes/10 Cannons the optimal way to be competitive while also not being a WAAC douchebag? Help me /tg/ because damn it do I love the Wraith models and DE models.

WBs are a great assault unit against things that have trouble wounding it, but will fall apart from anything high strength. D-scythes are pretty gnarly to be on the receiving end of, but 5/10 is alright.

Tau are cheaper than krieg if you consider forgeworld prices. Make sure to do some research and don't let other people force you into buying a specific list of models. You need to build your army for yourself, not be giving a list to play.

Basically, avoid someone saying "Oh you need to take this, and this, and these, and those and a few of these, that's your army."

If you want to get into the game, do so on your terms. If you simply spend all the money on an army you didn't even make yourself, how long do you really think you are going to play the game?

Wraithblades are a waste. You'd be better off dropping a squad of Scorpions out of a raider and doing that, the Exarch alone will kill more than the WB squad on the first turn he charges.

Run one unit of D-Scythe Guard, they are absolutely effective against anything that's not a unit of Wraiths or Lychguard, and only one unit is not over cheese

I might get a box because my iron hands need to be 30k as well. It's a good box for all marine players. You get 5 termies, 1 termi HQ, 1 other HQ, 30 tacticals and a contemptor. For $150 USD I think. 30 tactics is $150 alone.

I play orks and DA, both combat orientated. Those units will be thinned the fuck down before they get to MY lines let alone a shooting armies. You can't do that sort of army without some long range support, even if it's only a defiler or vindicator.

A killkannon or demolisher shell will gut the strength out of any one of those units every time it fires.
Tankbustas and chainfists fuck vehicles over, especially those that are trying to get towards me.

See those things up there? They don't do any of that after getting shot at. You can't only take assault units and have a standing chance unless you go full KDK.

They're an actualyl sci-fi race in what is generally billed as a sci-fi wargame, having a lot of aesthetics people have come to expect from sci-fi, even before the suits come out. For a new player looking to get into wargaming (Which is how 85% of GW's fanbase starts, rather than being wargamers looking to specifically get into 40k) that's a huge draw. And once you have an army, it's hard to buy into a new one, since the startup can be so high.

Which is actually a good thing for BA.

Either way, Death Company are hands down the best unit in BA codex, but they're Elite, so you're fucked, right?

I remember picking a box of Tau up when I was young because I liked the look of their advanced exo-suits, aliens and their underdog status. When I got my hands on the codex (4th edition) I lapped up all the information about their society, allies, battles and tactics. The lore was gripping, the models were cool and I understood how to play them effectively.

If you want to go deeper: Marines were too mainstream. Chaos was too needlessly evil. I wasn't into the army enough for Guard. Tyranids and Necrons didn't have personality (at the time). Elves never appealed to me so both Eldars were out. Orks were cool but Tau were just better.

40k has changed but I still remember that kid poring over the Tau Codex on ever car and train trip, thinking up new tactics and rereading the fluff.

I have the Dark Vengeance rulebook.

I am looking at my brothers hard copy Necron codex and in his Appendix the weapons the weapon have stats under them. on this PDF for Dark Angels they don't.

Also, that DA codex pdf looks kinda like it's a rip of the ipad codex? In the ipad versions all the rules are hiden behind the blue text and show up when you click on it. Which doesn't translate to pdf rips. You might want to download an ebook version or at least a different pdf.

Basically Carnac was saying Imperium was weak and Tau were going to rape them or something and this was because it says so in the Tau codex. This guy (and several others) pointed out that each codex is biased toward the faction it's about...well for obvious reasons.

So Carnac kept saying it as fact, so this guy kept going "PROOFS?" and posting the Chicken pictures. Carnac kept going "I-i-in this book!" and the guy would reply "PROOFS? I SEE NO PROOFS.". Carnac refused to get the specific book, page and fluff piece. Everything he mentioned was a specific Tau biased bit of fluff. So the guy kept going on about proofs that Tau were amazing from a non-biased source. Carnac gave up irrc.

New thread was made and the proofs guy made that picture with the chicken at the back. It's relevativly new meme wise. But whenever Carnac says something now, as if he is the voice of authority, you go "PROOFS?" until he gives you something specific. Which he won't. Oh but he'll claim your stuff isn't proof, even if you do it, saying it's misinterpreted and his view is 100% right. Such as, Bel'akor wasn't the Daemon killed by Lizardmen, he couldn't have been there cause "muh timeline" and it was another Undivided Daemon Prince who looked exactly like him. Or the Slann mummy with the golden death mask summoning meteors just like Kroak's warscroll says, isn't Kroak. Cause he "turned to ash!!!" in End Times (despite everybody else being alive, somehow).

So on, so forth.

Pretty sure at least the 6e version of the DV rulebook had the weapon stats. They weren't in the back like you might be thinking for the codex.

Basically the hardcover codex will have the rules for the DA-specific (or otherwise not in the BRB) weapons, such as the grav guns for example. But will also at the start of the weapon section have a thing that says "see the BRB for the following weapons" and then lists off a bunch of the common weapons, at least the ones DA can use.

But again, the DV rulebook, 6e or 7e, should have those weapon rules. You might just be looking in the wrong place.

But, regardless, yes. Another fun fact about open-topped transports: the occupants can fire at full ballistic skill even when they jink. Dark Eldar players use this all the time to their advantage, but it makes Wraithcannon Guard that much better. You're essentially zipping them around the board with 12" moves and giving them a 4+ cover save with 3 HP. Wraithguard shooting out of raiders is one of the strongest ally abusers in the game. ALWAYS JINK.

Well, take the army list in the Vraks book for example. It has a list of Lords of War you can use and the books they were published in. Many of them say they were published in Imperial Armour: Apocalypse. Some of them just have the Super Heavy stamp. So, if they're not published anywhere else, I can't use them unless I'm playing Apocalypse?

APCB is Armor Piercing Capped Ballistic which is a type of round used during WWII in a rifled gun, Straight armor piercing rounds have a tendency to fragment or deflect on impact so a soft cap was added to deform and help mitigate this hence the Capped Ballistic. However since then no one uses those as armor piercing rounds as using a fin stabilized dart is superior as the very sharp point and small cross section compared to length as well as the high muzzle velocity prevents deflection even at very wide angles. These are used in smoothbore guns because the dart is too long compared to the diameter of the barrel for rifling to work.

However in Halo the scorpion tank is cited as using APCB rounds in a smoothbore gun as anti infantry rounds because the chucklefucks who wrote the halo backstory know less about military weapons than the idiots who write 40k fluff with our tanks have less armor than shermans hence Master chief would get scragged fighting against WWII class weapons and shouldnt even try to fight anything seriously

Ha! I appreciate the help. I think I'll probably go Wraithguard then so I don't regret Wraithblades down the line. And actually with night shields it'll be a 3+ jink, which is pretty nasty. I always liked the Wraith models when I played back in 3rd/4th edition and now that I'm getting back into the hobby I'd take advantage of the formation that only has one living elf in it.

Master Chief isn't a regular human. Even regular spartans are peak or above human, and humans in 40k can sometimes have BS4 and whatnot. He would have at least space marine stats for WS and BS, maybe more. if you really want to get your halo wank on you can give him assassin-esque stats.

Then again Gordon Freeman would be something like BS10 W2 regenerate wounds on a 2+ rerollable.

And with the new Tau update, things aren't getting better anytime soon, especially since Chaos doesn't seem to be on the horizon.

Meanwhile, there's this set of vehicles, always the most expensive part of an Imperial army, for less than half the cost it would take you to assemble it bit by bit, and half of it, the Predators, the Dreadnought, the Land Raiders, and even the Razorbacks since the turrets aren't glued on, would be usable in your chaos list as well, so you'd get use of them while you build up your "Loyalist" (and probably renegade, because who wants to stick with the Imperium) chapter.

Sounds great, doesn't it?

Take the Darkshroud with 3 landspeeders with double heavy bolters. It's nasty. Take minimum size units of bikers with maxed special weapons, matching combi-weapons on the sargeants, and melta bombs all around.

Command squad is nasty. Champion to take challenges off sammael, Apothecary, Grenade launcher, and the Ravenwing Company Banner for guaranteed hit and run are huge.

I love it. It's super strong.

Ignore Cover will fuck you and you cannot afford to get bogged down in melee.

Drop the Dark Talon; they rarely kill back their points.

Instead, I would run 2 Meltas on the first Squad of 3, and 2 Grav on the second squad of 3.

If you are going to run a double MM speeder, take the formation for the attack squadron. BS5 melta shots are great. Especially with outflank.

If you are doing ITC, I would strongly recommend an Interrogator Chaplain on a bike instead of Sammael, especially at this points level. Rerolls in melee, fear, and the S7 AP3 mace do work on the soft targets you are charging with your knights.

1 squad of Kroot with 1 Kroot Hound is the sleeper auto-take squad for Tau players in the know. If they just take all sniper Kroot or naked Kroot, at least they were smart enough to take a squad. If they take zero Kroot, they are a typical bad Tau player.

The aesthetics are the least offensive part of the Tau. It even makes them kind of cool.

If you don't know why people hate Tau, you are probably part of the problem.

If you looked at Blanche's Tau concept artwork, they could easily fit in the universe. And I hate Blanche. But GW wrote them in the most retarded away possible and their stupid rules don't help.

Do you know how OP this is. This is basically 2 regenerating wounds guaranteed each game.

Movement phase
Shooting phase
Psychic phase
Declare charge phase
Assault phase
Pile in phase
Initiative 10 phase
Initiative 9 phase
etc

A less ass-retarded way to do it and more fitting to the game is have him regenerate to full wounds at the end of each player turn, and give him a low amount of wounds.

Those will probably help. The game is filled with things that require strong guns to kill, like Imperial Knights and T8 crap.

If you're new and your opponents aren't trying to crush you as hard as they can, you can probably get away with just buying what you like the looks of. That's what I do, and since I spend 99% of the time building and painting and talking online and only 1% of the time actually playing, it's better to buy what I like.

I keep an unpainted tryhard second army around for when I need to crush my opponent. It's pretty easy to make one of these since starter set bikes are so cheap on eBay.

soldiers carry knives and stuff, but you will always, always want to shoot people from afar if you can. it's just intelligent to drop your targets before they are in spitting distance. melee should be your last option, not your goal.

i think people are just sour that models have a lot of melee stats and so forth, and they die before they can get to melee to opponents who know what they can do if they get to assault.

i suppose it's also unsatisfying since the game seems to have been constructed with melee being a frequent thing in mind (growing out of WHF roots), but the game itself doesn't really advantage it any more. in my mind, it really shouldn't, since melee is so potent that if you get into melee you're going to shred whatever you're in with, or break the unit and have them run away, or otherwise ruin them.

In short, range is always superior to assault, as it should be, but you're right, it's harder to get into melee combat that it used to be.

Needs to be a rethink. As you said, getting into combat with dedicated melee unit against a non-dedicated melee unit (or range unit, as you will) will result in you killing them. If you can get into combat with ease, then range becomes shit.

I think it's a few rules or even a single rule, short of being OK. Spartan Assault tanks et al need to become Dedicated Transports for some. Grey Knights, for example.

Melee is viable. You just have to be a monster to succeed at it in the face of today's shooting adversity.

Imperial Knights, Thunderwolf Cavalry, Necron Wraiths, Flying Monstrous Creatures, etc are all good at assault.

Basically you need to be a jump/jet/flying superheavy/MC or have W2 T5 3++ with 12" movement and ignore cover or better. You also probably need Invisibility.

Why is he still in the codex? He take sup two slots, is some OC from the days when WD used to do battle reports (with fluff) and he was just a regular BA Captain who did some shit and got turned into a character.

Did you even read the page that story is from? He wouldn't even have attacked her to begin with if they weren't losing so hard. He said he respected that she never went Rambo since he agreed true warlords don't lead from the front, but from the shadows. But he was forced to eliminate her or the RG would lose. Why would he believe that was a decoy lure when she was already playing hard to get the entire war?

i was speaking from a general imperium strategy standpoint, obviously on the ground individual leaders and such respond differently.

i do think eventually he let frustration get the better of him, and he also thought he had her dead to rights when he dropped down, or he wouldn't have. it ended up being a critical misread of her strategy and overall character, which he though he had come to understand over the course of the conflict.

in the end she kind of did go rambo on him, which he didn't expect at all, even though he himself went rambo to take her out, because he was really tired of her shit and thought it the best, possibly only chance to swing the battle in his favor.

it was an overall interesting character interaction, though an ignominious disappointing end for faction leader guy. but hey, now they have a new faction leader dude, right? that's something, i guess.

A sniper who's dedicated to killing important shit. While the artillery will kill whatever. For example, say an enemy officer is behind cover/forcefields or whatever and artillery can't do it. You send the sniper in, who can penetrate the shield/defences. A bit like the Vindicare, but a big Tau mech thing.

I just love snipers man. I just don't see any of the units in Tau, even with conversions, working like that. Broadsides look great (FW's old Broadside versions are sold out, maybe a change is inc), Riptide is a front line unit, Stormsurge is fire support, Supremecy Armour is front line. Ghostkeel is stealth.

So instead of an area fire support suit, you have a single target fire support suit. Something that can make sure something is dead from a long way away.

Go "Tau realised that the Commanders of the newly arrived Imperial fleet were vastly superior to the ones they had faced earlier. The tactics which had worked so well in previous battles began to falter, as the humans set up counter-measures. From scanners and half-machines dedicated to revealing our stealth suits, to powerful forcefield generators which shimmered when hit, similar to those found on their giant, ugly machines. Which is a shame, as DC are the only viable Elites you have. Astorath and Dante are the only good characters you have (Astorath only cause you NEED to take him due to x3 DC), some other codexes also suffer from this bollocks. I think Ork codex has both units which aren't free and some that become free. Snitrot becomes free. Lukas the Trickster becomes free. Lemartes is just a poor character, he's expensive, means you can only take 2 DC's and has 2 wounds.

While I can't do any armies due to my health, I wanted to make a Generic Captain for BA's, with those two relics, the special Death Mask + The wings.. I'd make him the Sanguinary Guard Captain. Yeah, SG suck anus (and it blows my mind how bad they are...) but they look cool. Sanguinour is awesome, T4 man. Mephstion has no ++ save, so he's useless and you're forced to go Sanguinary for Quickening + Whatever, regardless you always use the same spells. Blood Sword to become S10, Quickening for +3I +3A and Activate Force. You COULD put a Lib in with the Relic Staff and make him activate the Force, but by then, you've bought a Lib and can just use them as your buffer. Warp Speed + Endurance are the two spells you'd want. +D3 I +D3 A from Quickening, +D3 I +D3A from Warp Speed, FnP Eternal Warrior and something else from Endurance. Makes Mephy interesting, with +6I +6A at S10.

But, problem is, he has just a basic Force Sword and Plasma Pistol, he never used to.

BA dex is just a cluster fuck.

Thankfully, Relic Leviathan Dreads can be given to them. Which is cool. 4A base, +1 on charge, +1 from two melee weapons at S10 AP2. Against Infantry, D6 roll, 4+ = D3 wounds instead. Against Forts/Buildings/Vehicles, you get Armourbane and Wrecker (this obv an upgrade, but since you can alternate, it's great).

Throw Warp Speed on it for hopeful 9 attacks on charge. Shame you can't put Quickening on it..

actually not all that mad. shadowsun plot armor is annoying, but its so obvious that its hard to get really angry about, mostly just laugh at it.

also having our chapter master axed gave us a very interesting gift: most RG are modeled as 3rd company because its the easiest to regocnize, and doesn't get mistaken for other marine chapters as easily as some of the other company colors do. with shrike ascending to chapter master and his successor completely unnamed, we RG folks can finally run 3rd company shadow captains of our choosing. if shrike finally gets artificer and an orbital bombardment out of the deal eventually, so much the better. (lack or artificer is a big glaring flaw in his crunch, which makes him hard to justify at times)

and considering RG just got handed the best supplement/codex/whatever that helps them actually play to thier theme since shrike's wing was a thing in 4th? I'll put up with a lot of nonsense to have crunch that actually fits the fluff they've had for years for a change.

it would perhaps be good if the tau had more than, like, one heroic figure in their whole core army (farsight's faction has pretty much all the rest of them), so that they could actually kill some of their faction lore heroes and replace them the way they can with, like, everyone else. it's a dumb double standard, i think.

also, shadowsun is clearly a granny at this point going by character art, her continued success on the field is kind of aberrant. all the cyber enhancements and anti-aging techniques they have can't keep her from looking like one of those dolls you make out of dried-up apples.

rules-wise the kauyon book does flesh out two whole marine factions and give them a lot of cool shit that makes them distinct, even moreso than it actually does for the tau, which is pretty rad.

i can understand not being pleased with the fluff, but the rules are pretty great if you collect either of those factions.

Actually, fluff- and lookwise my favourite army is probably Dark Eldar, but their rules suck (at least when used as anything other than WWP-caddies for Eldar) and the models are impossible to transport without spikes breaking off your raiders, so I mostly play using my Tau.

I'm new to the hobby, and I recently got my hands on a brand new Tau package for about $90 including:
-Fire Warrior team
-Pathfinder team
-6x XV15 Stealth Battlesuits
-12 Kroot Warriors (I don't really plan to even build them)
-3 XV8 Crisis Battlesuit
-Hammerhead
-Commander Farsight

But I feel like this could use more dakka. Like, maybe those overpriced Riptide, Ghostkeel, or even a Stormsurge. Or even maybe a second Hammerhead? Should I get a Devilfish?

No. There is no laws against it. In the "Fire Caste" novel a Tau water caste governor extends his life using Imperial life-prolonging treatments from his gue'vesa tech priests.

Other Tau view his with disgust because the idea of selfishly clinging to life and overstaying your welcome in this world is distasteful for them. It's a cultural aversion more than anything.

I don't think snapshots (or rather overwatch) really make that big of a difference usually. If a squad of Marines charges a squad of Chaos Marines, they'll probably take 1 or 2 wounds form overwatch and likely save both tanks to their 3+ saves. If a squad of 50 Orks charges a squad of Marines, they'll probably lose a couple to overwatch, but the remaining Orks can still overwhelm the Marines easily.
Overwatch only really matters if you're charging a unit where every model has an ap2/3 weapon or you're playing an army whose assault unit are both fragile and come in small squads (so Dark Eldar).
The big reason melee sucks is the difficulty in getting there. You can't assault out of a non-open topped transport (aside froma few exceptions like the Land Raider) even if it's stationary, so you have to spend at least oen turn just standing in front of your transport getting shot at. And that's assuming your transport didn't get blown up before you got into charge range. Assualt units are very good, but only if they're fast and durable enough to get into melee without being shot (so, basically deathstars with rerollable 2+/3++/4+++ bullshit).

i think for fire warrior teams, unless you're going to camp out in a corner, you'd want a devilfish as a dedicated transport. they're too fragile otherwise.

for additional dakka, you can't go wrong with a riptide (a legitimate threat on the board, absorbs a lot of fire, very shooty and maneuverable, really great model). ghostkeels work well with stealthsuits, even if they aren't terribly potent shoot-wise, and their unique rules really help protect your dudes. if you're gonna rock stealth suits, i'd go with a ghostkeel too. it is, likewise, a great model.

stormsurge is pretty solid, and gives you access to D-strength missiles if you have markerlights on target. that's pretty keen, but you won't really need one of these dudes in smaller games. I'd grab one because giant robots, but it's not vital.

I'd honestly pick up a group of broadsides for your dakka needs to start, they are pretty great problem-solvers, and can be kitted to deal with various things. i'd magnetize the shit out of them so you can swap arms and sub-weapons and the like, if you're feeling ambitious.

GW generally doesn't like killing special characters. There are some expamples of posthumour characters, but usually those are ones that lived a long time before the current point in the timeline (for example WHFB had half the Orc characters be warbosses who had led some of the biggest and most famous waaghs the Empire fought against but had been dead for decades or centuries, and IG used to have rules for Lord Solar Macharius, another "historical" character). Tycho is the only exception I can think of, as he was killed in the 3rd war of Armageddon campaign, but he was originally just a random captain used in some battle rports that somehow ended up becoming a special character. Lysander was another one, having originally supposed to have died at the hands of Iron Warriors, but his death got retconned.

You can have non-special character Tau HQs killed in the fluff (like how Shadowsun's sister got killed during the Medusa IV campaign, or the ethereal got assassinated during the Taros campaign), just like you can kill non-special character Marine HQs. In fact I think the whole reason for killing off the RG chapter master was so they could make Shrike (who actually has a model and is pretty much the posterboy for RG) the new CM, rather than some random guy who most people have never heard about.

They've never given her age, but I would quess she's at least in her early 30s. It takes at least 16 years to become a commander (you have to serve a minimum of 4 years as a fire warrior to become a battlesuit pilot, then another 4 to become a shas'vre and another 4 to become a commander). No idea what age Tau are when they start as fire warriors, although considering Tau mature faster than humans it's probably earlier than with humans. One of the novels features a 10 years old FW who is mentioned to be unusually young and having passed basic training earlier than normal due to being highly skilled. Based on how he's described he seems to be equivalent of a human teenager/younf adult (clearly younger than the adult FWs, but not really a child either). The exact numbers on Tau lifespan vary somewhat depending on the source, but it seems to be around 40 - 60 years, although Ethereals live considerably older and Puretide was around 60 when he retired and lived for a long time after that, albeit with the aid of life support. Tau aren't supposed to suffer from old age quite the same way as humans do, though. They stay "in their prime" for most of their lives before their bodies start to degrade and they die shortly after.

Alright, had a weird discussion yesterday during a game.

So an IG player targets a group of jetbikes with some heavy weapons. Jetbikes jink to get the 4+ cover save. He shoots a blast weapon at him, and first off, claims the jet bikes can no longer jink. Rules lawyer tells him he is wrong, because he is already jinking, and even if it is a shot by shot basis, he has literally no reason not to jink.

He then shoots indirectly with another large blast weapon, at the ground next to the jetbikes, and scatters straight on top of the unit. Shit hits the fan, and 25 minutes is spent discussing whether or not he still gets his cover save from jinking.

Can anyone shed some light on this? None of us are particularly good at English, and we can't really properly understand the rules. We know you cannot jink if you aren't targeted, but if you started jinking because of a previous shooting attack previously in the same phase, I'd assume you are still jinking. Or how does this work?

Can't remember how jink is worded and I don't have my rulebook with me now, but one can't place blast markers on a empty ground. The initial place for them must be on top of an enemy model so that no friendly model is under the blast marker.

I'd advise you to start with something small, just to see if you have the patience, time, and budget to get into the painting and hobby. A Pathfinder kit sounds fine, and they're not too expensive.
If you're planning on small games, maybe get a FW team, a Hammerhead, and if you have the money, a stealth team, or a few Crisis Battlesuits.

It'll never happen, but moving to a d10 system would allow for far more granularity between stats.

Stuff like Orks being str 3 when everything points to them being str 4 for example - because they're very strong (stronger than a human) but not quite as strong as a space marine.

They could be str 4, regular space marines str 5, humans str 3, etc

A GW wouldn't let you use a printed one. Best bet in that situation is to use a cheap tablet and pirate the ebook versions since they can;t prove anything that way.
