AoS is a casual wargame. It's not competitive at all. It lends itself well to narrative campaigns and casual games.

Basically you make a force of what you think would be cool, and that's how it's played. Instead of doing standard pitch battles, against an opponent, you play scenarios with differing objectives. You tell the story of your heroes in your army.

It has no points system because it doesnt pretend to balance itself out. That's up to the players.

It takes the right mindset to play that is not prevalent in most wargames. If you are looking for a simple fun casual game with a cool miniatures line, then this is the game for you.

If you want something that can be played competitively and to enter leagues and tournaments in, then this game is not for you.

The problem people have with this game is they wanted GW to make 9th edition WHFB, and instead they got something completely different. GW just decided to make a completely different game that uses the same minis, and many take issue with that.

It's a good game, but again, it takes the right mindset. And you are going to be pummeled constanly by assblasted trolls if you even admit in a tiny degree that you like it.

Thanks, this kinda was my take on it.
I saw a lot of the complaints about GW's, and I am.nit dismissing them or the Anon's that voiced them.
But I went into my local GW today and talked with them about wargames and AoS sounded like it was GW addressing some of the issues people had.
And as for level of play, yeah, I'm looking for something casual, and 4 pages of rules is an lot easier then 200.
Plus the models do look cool as shit.
I like the Ent looking things.

I would assume that's one way to save a little money on the hobby.
But it looks perfect for us.
I used to do MTG and the wife did too but nowhere as much as I used to.
We think we are going to do this for our winter hobby and she is excited over the models, the rules, and so far the culture.
Most of the GW players (even here) have been way better than MTG players and other nerd cultures.
So her being on board with this is a huge benefit.
She like the khorne demons.

A sylvaneth force is a great example of making a themed list and it synergizing well.

I guess synergy would be the closest thing we would get to what constitutes a 'good' army. If the units work well together and play off each other then it's a well rounded army.

Other things that you may want to look into if you want to broaden the range is wood elves. They may not have things that always play off of sylvaneth tactics, but they definitely fit into the woodland revenge theme.

Another big thing about AoS is it's all about the heroes. They are the core of your force, and likewise story. Some call this game 'herohammer' because your heroes make or break your forces.

Tools and paints is definitely one of those things you do NOT NEED to go GW. Their stuff is overpriced, especially in the tools department. A lot of hobby supplies stores sell you what you need. Paints you do want to go a little more on the expensive side, but not GW expensive. Vallejo, Reaper, Army Painter, are all good paint brands. Just don't do cheap craft store paints. Ask a WIP general about that if you are curious.

But tools you can go cheap. I use brushes from hobby stores like Michaels and Hobby Lobby, I use clippers from a hardware store, blades from there as well, etc.

Anyway It looks like you guys have the right attitude. Check out the links in the OP. Swenson made a guide of ideas for starting themed armies for $200. It gives you and idea what you can be doing.

GW paints are excellent, but expensive. Their inks are especially good, I've moved to using only Gw paints. Vajello paints are also excellent but I havent used them much.

For brushes GW ones are very good, armypainter ones are fucking terrible, Windsor and Newton are top fucking tier. I'd settle for the GW ones if you don't want to go through the hassle of finding the best brushes, theyre expensive but pretty damn decent.

For tools stay as far away from GW products as fucking possible. Armypainter sell what were basically GW products 10 years ago at a fraction of the price, I use their clippers and pin vice. Otherwise go to a hobby shop or hardware store and see if you can find what you need.

Good luck with the new hobby, you'll really enjoy it.

It's not like it has any real connection to the old world beyond chaotic entities, the same races and some gods named after characters that were there
And the only casualty correlation being the winds forming the realms after the end can easily be ignored, with the winds creating the world independently from the end times, or explained trough chaos temporal bullshit
For the first: It's chaos, ain't gonna explain interdimensional paradoxes
For the second: The races seeded by the old ones ended there too
For the third: The same mechanism that created the chaos gods; with the "gods of order" spawning and gaining consciousness from the emotions, powers and personalities gathering around particular individuals on the old world
It allows both worlds and even opens up the possibility of interactions
It's simple unless you are a shitter the level of carnac

I get people mourning the death of the old world. I played 8th edition and before that I just read a lot of the books. Being a Dwarf fan, Grudgelore is one of my favorite books of all time.

I still like the new setting, I think it's very creative and leaves a lot for players to make their own stories, but the old world still holds a special place in my heart. So I really wouldn't mind at all playing games of AoS in the old world.

I have often wondered how I would put the Stormcast Eternals in the context of the old world. It might be interesting. I know some guys on /whfb/ was working on it, but not sure where it went.

They make medieval space marines WHICH ARE space marines and share the exact same assets with their 40k brethren.

mini wargaming is a great hobby for inclement weather/climate/seasons--have fun together!

In most countries there should be an online retailer selling the official mini's ~20-25% off. Other than GW's washes, buy 3rd party for everything else. I also like to dry-brush their metallic paints straight from the pot.

Raphael 8404 & Windsor-Newton are good brushes for the money, just take care of them!

Look into building a wet palette, though if you use Vallejo Model Airs paints then you don't need to water them down. Their model metallics are nice too.

Have the wife take a look at the Khorne Bloodbound book in the opening post for his fluff. She can mix in units from there, Warriors of- & Daemon of Chaos pretty easy.

One of the main books had Nurgle & Skaven vs. Stormcast & the Sylvaneth so you should be able to find fluff for your army too. Stormcast & Wood Elves are prolly your most obvious allies, if you want to paint something other than treemen.

Also, in the Guerrilla Mini Games youtube channel, Ash plays against at least 1 Sylvaneth army in the Realms of Battle (Reports) if you want to see them in action. Note; his grasp of rules & tactics are better in the newer episodes.

Google Image Search, Pinterest, & Cool Mini or Not are good places to check out for inspiration.

Play scenarios/battleplans, use lots of terrain, & to start with play each other with similar wound counts, be mindful of keyword synergies/limits, & don't go too crazy on summoning, depending on how much better her guys are than yours.

The r/ageofsigmar subreddit would be another place to go for advice, also there are mini painting subreddits as well

UK has the best tournament scene so far for AoS.

Check out podcasts like HeelanHammer, FaceHammer, & others on the podcast addict app.

I'm in the same boat as the other anon. I use almost entirely GW stuff,except for the tools. Yeah they're not quite as good as their competitors, and they're more expensive, but the quality is good enough, and they're far more convenient. That's the entire point of GW's range.

Vallejo shit is like water. PP uses a sketchy acrylic medium. GW is like paste in comparison, which lets you dilute to taste, and go figure you can't just magically add pigment density to the medium, but you can easily dilute a concentrated paint by adding medium.

The only qualm I have about GW paints is the fucking pot, which is garbage. Dropper tops would do so much better.

GW brushes are the absolutely worst brushes you can get.

Go to your art store, get a brush that's 10x better for half the price.

You want acrylic liner brushes for normal painting and detailing and flat brushes for drybrushing and applying washes to large areas.

If you want cheaper get the packs of acrylic artist brushes, I got 4 brushes for $4 (with a coupon, regular price was $8) but they're still much higher quality than GW SHIT. They're all liner brushes mostly for detail work.

The other pack I got was 8 brushes for 8 dollars, much bigger brushes with a wider range, some great brushes for basecoating and drybrushing, a few are too large for man-size models but are a godsend on bigger pieces

I can dig it. I like how communities are making an effort to make AoS fit all sorts of playstyles. I would like to see this gain more recognition, if anything. For home games and campaigns I will continue to run AoS wit just the core rules, but I wouldn't mind attending events with this kind of stuff.

My only concern is their army composition system, which could severely limit some themed lists, like no allies or batallions. And it's doing base to base measuring, which makes it difficult when people are still on square bases, or when I have something with no base because it doesnt need a base to stand (like some of the bigger monsters or war machines). But their summoning changes are kinda nice.

All in all I would use the points cost system if anything and leave everything else generally the same at its core.

I'm incredibly confused as to why anyone would have an issue with people deciding to play games of AoS set in the Old World.

Several of my friends and I decided to treat AoS as a fun casual way of building warband forces of armies we never had the balls to confront in 8th ed (not wanting to paint 100-man blocks of skavenslaves, nightgoblins, or peasants, for instance). Been having some fun, basically pretending that the story is exactly where it left off just before the End-Times.

Where's the problem?

You have many players on different ends of the spectrum. Some are all or nothing, and some are barely embracing it. Most reasonably players are somewhere in the middle. There is a lot of lore in the old world that can still be explored, and AoS is a great game to do that in.

So I've been wracking my brain trying to define what kind of wargame AoS is. It's not a mass battles game like WHFB or KoW are, it could be argued that it's a fantasy skirmish game, but I was never satisfied with that definition. Since the focus of the game is narrative battles, that needs to reflect in it.

People use that as an excuse, but *how* is it narrative-focused? What aspect of the rules makes the game more open to narrative play or storytelling?

The rulebook is 4pages long and by necessity, the game has had fluff and flavour replaced by abstractions.
Miscasts were narrative.
Flanking was narrative.
Capturing banners was narrative.
Broader spell lores and magic armouries were narrative.

Removing the bulk of rules has not improved the cinematic aspect of the game, it has *forced* players to imagine their way through the heavily abstracted rules.
The only genuine improvement I can see to narrative gaming is the removal of 25% Core, max 50% Special and the like. But even then, it is gaining player-narrative ('My army is a special case that is composed entirely of specialists') at the expense of faction-narrative ('Empire armies are formed around a mutually-supportive Detachment system with limited cavalry hammerblows').

Age of Sigmar is not a narrative game due to it being designed as one.
It is a narrative game because it is thoroughly incapable of being anything else.

The idea that its narratice means you think about games in terms of thematic play, as opposed to the strict pitched battles of equal forces you'd play in WHFB. In addition the lack of force orgs and core chices means you have the freedom to make thematic forces, that fit your narrative.

With less focus on the rules, it opens the game up to interpretation and faster pace. I often try to run narrative campaigns for 40k, and find it difficult at times to keep that pace due to it just being bogged down incredibly with the sheer amount of rules. I'm not saying 40k or whfb were confusing or difficult, it's just with the sheer amount of rules you had to track in any given game it didn't leave much room for creativity.

It still is. There are bonuses for flanking now, just not as obvious as providing a combat bonus. Have you even played this game?

That abstraction is where the narrativism comes into play. You come up with your own reason why that cast failed instead of a table telling you it did. And spell lores are still in the game, but they are just specific to races and regions, which is incredibly narrative. No duh wizards all know how to cast fireballs in the realm of fire. And while every wizard knows mystic shield and arcane bolt, they are not all the same arcane bolts and mystic shields. Each wizard would be casting it in their own way, and that's where the narrative comes into play.

I disagree. Removing the bulk of the rules freed the game up to imagining and creativity, and therefor narrative.

Which is it's design. Again, freeing up a lot of the rules opens the opportunity for narrative play. I'm not saying WHFB never was narrative, I'm just saying this new game invites it even more.

Yeah it's kindof interesting. From what I can gather a seraphon warband is considered a 'Starhost' and a group of these starhosts is called a 'Constellation'. It's a creative use of the theme.
