Anyone got some neat skill/setting examples of Magic tiers that are universally available?

Like, anyone who is anyone can pick up ShitKickerMagics1-3. Moving up a tier requires effort and preparation, learning intuitively rather than rote inscription, etc. And then you've got the chosen ones up a level who are busy kicking reality in the teeth.

Maybe having some base cantrips available to the general populace, like spark or prestidigitation. Basically something you can develop and retain if you put the time into it, like learning to ride a bike.

Not every single dirt-farmer around knows every cantrip, but the vast majority are at least capable of learning a couple.

"1st level" spells are unavailable to a person who isn't at least a level 1 pc/npc of a magical persuasion.

The basic setting concept being that magic is a plentiful, ubiquitous force in the world. An example springs to mind in Final Fantasy XII. Magic is so common place that, even in the filthy run-down slums of a conquered city, the streets are lit with magicked stones rather than oil lanterns. The stones are easier/cheaper to maintain than a simple lantern.

Think along that vein. Services and simple, everyday occurrences where magic is used in place of the bare minimum of technology.

Yeah, I was thinking something similar. The sort of thing that still allows for (slightly enhanced) medieval stasis.

Was just hoping for various settings where it was already implemented, without saying "fuck it", downloading every sourcebook and going from there.

Reign magic works something like that, the lower tier of all the magics are open for anyone to learn (and the cleaning spell from one school is known by many people) but the higher ones need you to attune to the school. You can temp attune but you need a temp attune spell for each magic school and it only lets you cast one needs attunement spell before you then have to cast it again.
Full attunement locks you out of casting any other school and generally does something else neat or horrible if you fuck up the attunement but a fcuked up attuement is still attunement. For example Equine Unity turns you into a centaur if it works and a horrible random parts horse freak if it is done incorrectly, The Ironebone school makes your bones iron so you become heavy but take less damage and punches are always like using a knuckleduster, failed attune makes you bones lead or gold instead, that sort of thing.

I've always wanted to do something like this. Essentially, people know cantrips for ensuring their knots stay tied, that their food doesn't spoil, maybe even the local elders know a trick or two to make sure a broken bone grows back straight or a wound doesn't fester.

Not huge things, but small things that are usually covered by superstition.

Good luck charms actually do carry a small bit of luck if made properly, a few simple chants keep the worst of pests away from the crops. Blessing a pitchfork so that it actually hurts evil shit.

Basically small things that don't give immediate results and aren't visible to the naked eye, but it obviously works, because your neighbour didn't do the proper chants and his crops got a bad infestation.

Mana was filled with specific sympathies and hidden actions, reacts a certain way. James the Smith carves "Strength-iron" into his axes and the mana reinforces them a bit. Donald the Healer spends a few days carefully draining the mana-aspect from Valerian root to make sleeping potions vastly more potent than valerian tea. Thomas the Farmer performs a luck ritual in the morning and that landmine in his field doesn't go off this time.

If you got a ruby, you can cast fireball, or some similar fire spell, a limited amount of times, at least until the magic inside runs out, with the same working for the gems of other elements
You just wait a bit for it to refill, sort of like a self-charging battery, with the bigger ones having more charge, but being unwieldy to use and taking longer to recharge

In the Elder Scrolls series,anyone who can read can learn magic by reading spellbooks, then get better at it by simply using the spell. And it's not even necessary to be in actual combat, just use telekinesis to move things around your house all day, and in a week at most you'll be prodigiously powerful, and have the energy reserves for practicing other spells. But Telekinesis levels Alteration, and Alteration includes a spell for transforming metal ores. Get a job with a mining company or a smith, get them to pay for the spellbook, and you can basically manufacture money, buy more spellbooks, then get into adventuring.

I treat spells and magic in the way most areas of study like the major sciences exist today. The books and materials are out there to read and sure enough there are plenty of people who can pick up a few cantrips the same way people can do at home science experiments and there are just as many self-taught wizards as their ones who've gone to universities but to get access to higher tiers of spells you need to be licesnced or have your PhD or simply go out and get spells on the black market if you can't be bothered with going the official route.

Sorcerers are treated like mutants for the most part that can replicate spells by watching other people use them but have their obvious quirks and mutations (such as the dragon blood sorcerer).

For Warlocks there are both sanctioned and unsanctioned patrons based on the cult/organization/religion in question

If you're talking D&D/PF, the pact magic supplements work exactly like this. There are classes for those who are especially skilled in binding, but any random schmuck can pick up the basics with a feat.

GURPS has stuff like that with a few systems, where you can fumble around with magic or use real limited magic a bit with little investment, but being good at it takes investment.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of magic being universally available, but I am a huge fan of magical people having small spells/cantrips all the time.

In my setting I gave all magic users a power calling 'Forcing', essentially it takes the ability of prestidigitation but is instead related to what a normal person can do with their body, but expanded at range.

So;
-Levitate a small object, hold it in place in the air. Throw something across a room.
-Animate a puppet or small object to do some task. Tie or untie knots in ropes.
-Whisper a word directly into someone's ear from across a room or blow out a candle
-Give a weak push or tip something over, break something very fragile.
-Hold something small down (like a piece of paper or mouse), press a pressure plate
-Drink from an open container across a room, or take bites of unprotected food
-Slap or crush tiny creatures or instects, force a paper to rip itself apart.
-Slam or open an unlocked door or window, brush back curtains
-Start a fire on anything flammable with a few seconds of concentration.
-Melt ice or snow faster then normal, dry something within a few moments.

My favorite thing about it so far though is when a wizard learns a spell really well, or fails to learn a spell, they may add a minor version of the spell's effect to their forcing list as a permanent minor ability.
