RE:Monster quests outright admit to taking the original's idea of monsters evolving pokemon-style, but then they run it in the original setting (with monstergirls for most of them except lizard (still a female, but a bipedal monstrous lizard)) and without mad edgy marysue of the original's protagonist.
Dragonball quests also run in dragonball universe but with "what if there was [a trio of extra space monkeys escaped the kaboom]/[Frieza's nephew that wasn't a total asshat]/[two Truffle clones dropped onto the planet in early Dragonball era]" and see how the characters derail the ever loving shit out of canon.
