Did they really remove Storm Sorcerer's bonus spells for the final version in SCAG? I'm reading over it, and it dosen't seem like they've given them anything else to make up for it. The whole archetype just seems like complete trash now.

Let's say an enemy was riding a large beast of some sort, and a player wants to Misty Step onto the beast and shove the enemy off.

How would you resolve this situation? Have the player move with the mount and have the unwilling mount attempt to use Shove for its attack action to knock the player off every round?

I have an idea for a character floating around in my head and I'd like some input from you /5eg/.

While I actually like the Purple Dragon Knight it's abilities are to flavor oriented for my taste, I'm also aware that the Knight from PHB II is by no means popular to a lot of people but I do like the abilities it does have.

Could the PHB II Knight be compressed into an Archetype or would most of it's class abilities be better off spread out to the other ones?

I could see the case for a few of the defensive abilities and some of the Knight's Challenge abilities being manuevers for the Battlemaster though. Also, could the same be said for the Legendary Leader PrC as well?

PDK just doesn't do a whole lot. It's way less interesting than the prestige version from 3X. It's good for a little healing thanks to Second Wind and that's about it. Are parties really not going to have a Rogue or Bard by level 7 to make use of Persuade? Would such a party even care about trying to persuade? How many groups get to 10 anyway? Is allowing a SINGLE ALLY to make ONE melee/ranged attack, not even a spell, at the cost of a reaction worth a 10th level ability? Christ.

So, I just got done playing through a session of princes of the apocalypse, and we just got to the second floor of the monastery that the cult of the blackened earth uses. In the first room we fought this gigantic insect with knives for hands, after that we found three doors, one of them locked, we open it with a key that we found on the first floor, go down it to the third floor and get ambushed by gargoyles trying to knock us off a bridge down a fifty foot chasm. later I find out that we're supposed to be in that room when we're like level 10. Do I get to look forward to game designers assuming that we clear out every level of a dungeon before advancing to the next one for the entire adventure?

You can handle it honestly, just gotta be clever about it. It's not the kind of thing you can, or should even try, to just go through with the goal of slaying everything in every room, and the GM shouldn't run it that way either. The GM can make it clear that lower levels are more dangerous, or like, have an alarm sound off or something. It's not clear how you can best handle players going deeper than they can really handle at that point, but still. The party shouldn't be pressing on farther than they have scouted or are prepared for either.

I think the assumption is that the party hits all the surface cult headquarters before ever descending into one of their deeper lairs. These lairs and surface HQs are also wildly different in level range so tackling them in some orders can make things pretty hard on you.

Shortly after it leaked we rolled up some level 10's and got playing a Halloween one shot.

Bladesinger is fun if you only want to occasionally wade into combat. Its not that good if you want to always melee since you will be low in HP. I dont stick to the "two combats a short rest" thing so sometimes its better

Purple Dragon Knight is booth good and bad. They have some nice options for tanking and such but they do seem to be kinda boring compared to the BM fighter

Sun soul monk seems a little under powered but the guy who plays it seems to really enjoy it.

Swashbuckler looks fun as hell. Our swashbuckler dipped fighter so he wears half plate and wields a heavy crossbow and "finess long sword" (refluffed rapier)

My players did enjoy that options like bladesinger and sun soul monk let them dance in and out of melee.

Played a brief ocean-bound campaign, although it wasn't with 5e. That changed pretty quickly when we stumbled down a side-quest headed by the party wizard to get the damn thing to fly. It worked.

What's /tg/'s opinion on the Abjurer's arcane ward and ritual/racials replenishing it's temp HP charges?

Crawford has ruled that by casting Alarm (1st level abjuration) spell as a ritual will restore 2hp to the shield per ritual cast.

What about the Deep Gnome racial/feat for casting non-detection at will? 6hp recharge per round, for free.

I believe by the wording it sounds RAW. Possibly not RAI however a stated, ritual casting does effect the shield.

Sorry if this has been brought up before. Currently making a Wizard and was curious.

I don't know, one anon a few threads back gave a good reasoning as to why all sorcerers should get free spells like that - I think his line was it gives them spells known on par with Bard while restricting it to spells thematic to their archetype, and spells prepared on par with Wizard without the versatility of their spellbook.

I was actually just thinking about writing bonus spell lists for the other archetypes too. For Wild Mage level 1 I was thinking Chromatic Orb and Color Spray but that's about as far as I got. What do you think /5eg/?

As for >>43363373, my players ended their last session barely escaping from a cursed island on a boat they found. No supplies, and one sailor among them. It's not a raft, but it's not exactly a huge boat either. There are 6 of them, and they're level 6.

I don't see a problem with rituals affecting the ward since alarm already takes a full minute to cast and 11 as a ritual, so it's only going to work out of combat and only if your GM gives you the time to do it.
Svirfneblin Magic + Arcane Ward is a nice combo but probably not too powerful since casting it will still take up your action.

Don't rely just on oceans.
Use lots of islands; focus on the exploration and survival aspects (food, water, supplies), make them or make a map of yourself that they discover as they explore.
Make most settlements just that; frontier places where people are just starting to lay down roots and make lives, and flesh out each one of them while making them few and far between, with maybe ONE large city.

Dot the islands with lots of ruins of different types for dungeons and features, but have them go LOOKING for ruins instead of finding them easily, except perhaps one spectacular one that can be seen from the shore.
Think up the culture or cultures that made them ahead of time and use similar features (recurring artistic motifs or building structures) in them to give a hint of a widespread people.

For the ocean itself, emphasize it's vastness and mystery; it's huge, dark, and deep. The ocean is the borders of the world, the in-between of land.
Who knows what lies 'neath the endless waves, hidden from the things that live on land.

In some ways it's like a space exploration game where space is the sea and the planets are islands.

Seaweed, rigging ropes, and the broken mast of a nearby ship allow climbing access onto the galleon's deck. The ship is crewed by undead, and defeating their captain dispels the mist and unnatural storm, allowing them to sail off on their sweet new boat.

The bonus spells are based on the level you get them, not the spell level. So 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th level spells, not 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th.

Group's setting is maritime, so all day everyday.

We ported space combat rules from Rogue Trader to handle ship combat, simplifying a lot of it on the process. The DMG had some basic guidelines for ships and crew, but not enough to be a useful model for running a warship or exploration vessel.

My new thread's resolution is not to needlessly stir the pot when it comes to arguments about splatbooks and jumping.

Though I did like the guy in the other thread whose analogy of my type of player was someone who makes sure they touch both sides of the door the exact same number of times. Very relatable.

I like Fighters in this edition. If I was a player, I'd probably roll one up. One of my players asked if I would let him use a bonus action to kick away the enemy's sword if he disarms them with the class feature, I said sure. Is that right? It should probably just be his single object interaction.

I'm not sure about the level 9 spell for Wild Magic - I like Reincarnate for the random element, but I also like the idea of the wild mage being able to infuse the surroundings with chaotic magical energy so that nearby objects come to life. The problem is, I also like the idea of summoning random elementals and I don't want to give them more or less the same ability twice. I'm also not totally happy about the 3rd level spells but there's not a lot of thematic options at that level.

Draconic Bloodline I've gone for domination/polymorphing effects as I think dragons can usually do that kind of stuff, but I can't help feeling it's not quite blasty enough to be properly draconic.

Kicking away the sword using his object interaction is probably fine, since it makes disarming worth a damn. It's not clear how it interacts with occupied space rules. If you need to be in the enemy's occupied space to move it, it'd be a bonus action for tumble or overrun (in the DMG) and then the object interaction to kick it away. Still worth it if you can disable a weapon-using NPC from hitting hard at all.

I think it's fine tbh. If my player asked that I would probably either run a straight dex check versus the enemy's check, to see who could get to the weapon first and secure some sort of possession of it (like a hockey faceoff). But if it was a tougher guy, I would've let him kick it away but maybe with the penalty of an opportunity attack, which definitely would've been a grapple.

Did you guys know Violet Fungus get 1d4 attacks? My players didn't, shit was awesome. Though, twice that session I had the monsters get a surprise round and only had them do one attack (even though they both had multi attack). It ended up being better as otherwise my players would probably be super hosed, but is that right? Do you get full attacks during surprise rounds?

I guess I'll open up the book, but I didn't want to have to look it up after I already rolled damage during the session.

btw, your players are playing it wrong. they should be getting the drop on the monsters, not the other way around.
even without any roughish features, not wearing heavy armor, having stealth as a skill, and grabbing a cloak of elvenkind asap is enough in most scenarios.

This is where the error is. You determine who is surprised, not the other way around. It could be as a group or by rolls or even by DM fiat. The rules say it's DM discretion.
Usually this is done by having characters make perception checks, or setting their passive perception as a DC against the enemies' stealth rolls. Being surprised means you skip the first round. Everyone who is not surprised has access to everything per usual (including 1d4 attacks). I believe this is covered in the initiative section. You need to memorize that! It's helpful af!

I had a pair of scouts do an ambush on the party when they were fucking around at home base.

Then the party was attacked by violet fungus and since it has the "false appearance" of harmless fungus, I gave the fungus a surprise round.

I guess it wasn't super fair, but it made sense to me. I'll be moving to a more standard format of dungeon and encounter spread soon, so they'll be able to sneak up on people. They actually got pretty close to sneaking up on the last encounter, but the fighter's heavy armor and him rolling a 3 made them alert.

One thing I've been toying with is making the Spell-less ranger the canon version, removing the spell-using one entirely, and giving both Hunter and Beastmaster archetypes to the spell-less ranger. It would make Ranger pretty bad ass, I feel, but it would essentially mean that, unlike every other class, Rangers only get one way to go.

IIRC in his home games even the ToT hasn't happened yet (if it would happen at all), but when asked about story writing and such, he is very support of all writers, no matter how shitty their writing is.

Wrong. The loading property means that you need a free hand to reload the weapon. A shield occupies your hand. Unless the rogue is spending an action every other turn to doff or don a shield, he's breaking the rules.

It's a little late for a response but oh well.
So you'll have one session per week at a game store that is affiliated with WotC. Each session will last 2 hours so it'll be hard to get much done each session unless your group of players are just focused on getting through.
That being said, each module has a lot of random encounters to compensate for them using the Experience system to level up the character, which can slow you down dramatically as combat in D&D is notoriously time consuming, especially with the allotted block of time.
The group of players that will be under the DM will range from 3 (min) - 7 (max), but in my experience it'll usually be more towards the max end. If it's the larger group then expect to either be underleveled or always have a large group of enemies to fight to compensate for player numbers; vice versa for small tables.
Also, you'll always feel like you never get enough done with each session so just enjoy the time you put into it.

I know fighters get a lot of class features (at least one per level), but how does choosing Purple Dragon Knight at 3rd level *change* the fighter?

You pick Battle Master and you have maneuvers, plus a skill proficiency as a bonus. Those maneuvers do a bunch of different things and really change the flow of combat.

You pick Eldritch Knight and you can cast spells. You'll be firing off magic missiles at a distance and teleporting your sword into your hand.

Champion is the worst but Improved Critical is still nice and has good synergies with other features.

What the hell does your Second Wind (that 1/rest thing) healing a few others a small amount do? It's not even 1d10 + fighter level, it's just 3 when you first get. It doesn't change anything.

And then the next feature, four levels later, is skill boosts. At least the Eldritch Knight is getting spells and spell slots all the while, and the Battle Master gets a couple more maneuvers then.

What am I missing, /tg/?

I posted in the last general and didn't get any responses, thought I'd ask again.

I want to play a character of old age in my upcoming campaign and I was wondering if anyone has any advice for it.

I'm still deciding on a class, but I have a few basic backstories worked up for each different one I play, stuff like old knight that was forced into retirement by his king of liege and now goes adventuring to make himself feel useful, or old king fu master monk traveling the land spreading his wisdom and enlightenment through adventuring, and even old rogue/vagabond looking for that one last score.

What are some good things to look for when roleplaying this kind of character and what are some pitfalls to look out for. I don't want to become That Guy of my group because my old man character is acting like a snob or prick or something.

Also, how do you justify the characters increase in power? The campaign starts at level 5, but it almost doesn't make sense to say it took him 60 years to make it to level 5, but he'll make it to 10 in a year or so just from adventuring.

Warriors who are blindly loyal to the crown, are given awesome equipment, respected by all upright cormyreans, and disdainful of anyone who is even mildly threatening to the crown.
They were both the secret police and the upright knights to look up towards.
They did not go against orders, and there was no such thing as an "Ex-Purple Dragon" if you were removed from the ranks of the Purple Dragons you were stripped of all of your gear and were publicly humilitated.

But they also came out of old school Cormyr which was controlling as fuck, and asking too many questions could get you in loads of trouble.
Being born with magical potential meant that you would eventually be picked up and brought to the War Wizard College. If you avoided that fate, you were a rogue wizard and hunted down.
War Wizards are sometimes randomly mixed into guard rotations, these wizards despite their names, were not known for their flashy spells, but for the fact that they could read your mind without you knowing it.

3e retconned Cormyr into "ye olde fantasy europe land", and they changed the PDK to a "Heals and buffs allies" character.

it would push DMs to put a bit of thought in the combat encounters, with waves of combatants, or triggers, and traps.

it's a mechanic that works best with dynamic combats, and those are fun!

Most people in game never level up, a commoner will have those base stats til the day they die. The veteran fighter in the MM is a fifth level fighter IIRC, and thats what you seem to be describing, so its probably the right powerlevel. Furthermore if he was an old member of the kings guard or whatever, his encounters would have been largely reactionary. Fend off assassins for 60 years? That can't really be more than a few dozen encounters, how many times a year is this king being assassinated? Meanwhile adventurers actively do shit like seek out assassins, powerful wizards and dragons. Makes sense that he would fight more as an adventurer than he did as a kings guardsmen.

There's one ridiculously small benefit for four levels, then something that might benefit the party but is individual to the PDK, then some other features that I can't quite fathom because I've never played past level 10.

Compare that to most archetypes where you can feel the change at 3rd level. Two players can play the same class, choose different archetypes, and be very different (especially in combat).

The PDK gets next to nothing.

My players just had our session last night with POTA and this is what happened:

They approached Lance Rock and triggered every trap, having rocks fall on them and almost dying, they approached the final room with the 4 Skeletons, 5 Crawling Claws and 1 zombie Plus Oreoith the Necromancer who the players lovingly called "Oreo The Cookiemancer." He called out to them, about ready to cast his level 3 magic missle to kill the party (much to the expectation of /tg/ in telling me that "Lance Rock WILL kill them," and the players played it completely different. They called out to the necromancer and offered a truce. They decided to fall back though after one of the players intimidated him (natural 20) and he fled back to the final room. So after a long drawn out fight, the players were a bit wounded and came as peacefully to Oreoith's room as they could, and another player indimidated him into submission with a 19 roll. After tying him up and progressing slowly towards the Tomb of Moving Stones, Oreoith has rubbed off on them and they are excited because they (as they believe) have found a very powerful NPC ally.

So I am re-reading the entry for Oreoith as we speak and constructing his character sheet. I know he's Chaotic Evil, but I am not playing him like a suicidal idiot. He will "accidentally" kill the minor NPC Acolyte during the coming battle. The Acolyte is a kind of pet npc for the wizard, so this act from Oreo would be seen as very vile, and any chance to escape or kill a player character with his level 3 magic missile is totally going to be totally viable for him. He still wants to be a great necromancer. Any other ideas are welcome though.

Knocking them prone also helps in case of AoO.
You could also shove someone out of a cliff with that action too.

How does Minor Image & creating cover work?

Does the PC have advantage on attack rolls, since he's hidden when he makes the attack roll from imaginary cover?
What happens when an enemy fires back? Surely the AC bonus from cover doesn't really exist, because if an attack misses by 2 for example, that means it hit cover and therefore passed through the illusion and hit the player anyway, right?
Even more, if the attack misses by the cover AC amount, the illusion is surely dispelled since the attacker has physical interaction with it and sees the arrow passing through, right?

Goblins tend to get bullied into working for stronger races. Hobgoblins and orcs are usually near the top of the chain in those situations because they're stronger than the little guys and smarter than the big ones.

Goblinoids include goblins, hobgoblins and bugbears. And weird extra shit from other editions that may never show up in 5e. They're all generally mean spirited assholes that survive by stealing/banditry, hobgoblins being outliers in that they are more organized and militant. In myth goblin was an umbrella term for all kinds of weird, supernatural, often mischievous creatures. There was a lot of overlap with trolls/boggarts/whatever else.

Orcs are something separate. In Forgotten Realms they came out of portals. They run around raiding and pillaging cause their god tells them to. Any similarities to goblins are coincidental. In fantasy fiction they come from Tolkien, who more or less used orc as another word for his goblins, which is likely the source of much confusion in fantasy fiction at large.

Ogres are related to giants. they are big, dumb and eat people sometimes before/after robbing them. They too are only coincidentally similar to orcs ad goblins. In myth ogres were cannibals, sometimes also giants. Though they were often intelligent and malevolently cunning, in contrast to how fantasy fiction has typcast them
