>>43369022I had some pretty good fun screwing around with Backrounds so far.
My Monk isn't even a "monk", actually.
He's a wastrel of a nobleman's son who was handed off to a guy who advertised himself as "giving education and discipline" so he could stop ruining the family name, which actually ended up meaning he taught history and lots of esoteric martial arts skills.
So far my character acts almost more like a foppish noble Fighter then a Monk, it's just that he has the insane physical discipline of a Monk rather then the basic martial training of a Fighter.
>>43369054We actually had this exact problem, except it was a ferret he turned into.
Our DM ruled it that they got an Advantage on Stealth AND the cover involved was automatically heavier since it covered more of them.
>>43369075Hmm...mechanically, not so much (though you can do a surprising number of things with Ki now) I suppose.
However like I said; we're old school 2e guys, and literally every martial got the same sorts of attacks ("Hit it with my [IWeapon of Choice]"), and it was left up to the players to describe it.
We have tons of fun doing that sort of thing because it's what we used to do way back when and our DM is good about giving Advantage/Disadvantage based on the surroundings and stuff we do to alter odds in our favor.
I know people want detailed mechanical differences for everything sometimes, but to most of us in our group that seems...hmm...a little OCD-ish and in some specific cases kinda whiny.
>>43369100Our Paly sure as hell can whip out some serious dice when it's go time with his Smite, but he saves it for when he needs it.
The player is good at resource management, it's something of a wonder he's never been interested in Wizards.
