I really want to get into Dungeons and Dragons but none of my friends are interested in playing. I get the impression that most of the gameplay is in the form of conversation, so I was wondering if you could just play over Skype. Do people do this? Does it work?
If so, is anyone interested in letting me join their group or setting one up with me? Considering time zones, it wouldn't really be handy to play with anyone in the U.S since I live in Europe.

Conversation is a about 60% vocal 40% body language. But yeah, people play over skype. People even play over text chat. You lose out nuances everytime, but it works.
As a complete noob without any group, your chances to get into a game are really slim though. There's no lack of players looking for groups online. Your best bet is to make friends first in the appropriate circles. Be that online or offline.

There aren't any game stores near me, I just don't think this kind of more serious table top gaming is popular in my area. I really think looking for people to play with online seems like the best option. I checked out Roll20 and it seem to fix most problems not having an actual table to play on.

My suggestion is play with hangouts or anything that can video conference, it makes the experience infinitely more enjoyable than just voip. If you're comfortable with it, that is.

Look, I've been DMing for almost 3 years online now.

I wish I could have a real group, so I could walk around a room and get into the acting in an actual way, have all the reactions and shit, etc.

But if you don't have long-time friends who you've known for many years to play with, DO NOT FUCKING PLAY. You will be miserable and it will be shit, and you'll have to deal with the billions of inbred fucktards that ruin everything, just so maybe you can find a group of strangers who you can pretend to like just so you can play.

This does not hold for actual groups that meet around a table. The personal investment is much higher so people deal with social issues instead of trolling and leaving. Even a bad group can make an excellent game. You will meet grognards beyond belief, but it will be okay. Some of the most enjoyable rounds I've had the pleasure to play have been with remarkably socially deficient players at the table. One of my favorite GM's is a guy you can't have a 10 minute conversation with without wanting to bleach your tympanic membrane. But he's a great narrator, and a decent dramaturg.

You can't can roleplaying. Technically you can play with strangers over the internet. But socially you'd have to be extremely lucky to even make it decent. During roleplaying a lot of things come together on a lot of levels, it is a shared creative process. In videochat, 80% of that is cut off.

Could anyone share some experiences of finding people to play with online. I was thinking it would work but I'm a bit apprehensive after some of the replies. Maybe I should just keep asking my friends until they give in. The only problem would be that we would all be inexperienced.

Look, I love my Roll20/Skype game, because I've been playing with these guys for almost 2 years now.

I can tolerate weeding through shit people online because I only have to do it briefly.

I would rather shoot myself than stride into a local hobby shop and try to put together a gaming group out of the miserable piles of shit with beards that fill that place. And that's not coming from some high-and-mighty "I'm better than those nerds" shit, because I'm not. I just cannot willingly try and make friends with those people, while being in the same room as the shit players and having to deal with them.

If you don't have a group of actual friends, do not fucking sit at a table to play D&D. Just don't.

There's 10k+ roleplayers within a 100 mile radius. It's Europe ffs. Find a convention. Find a store. Find a FB group if you must. That overlap of population density with nerd ratio gives you very good chances. There are dozens of European RPGs that are thriving and have never been translated to English. That alone should tell you something.

Well, I did it when I had to work in Germany and couldnt meet my group. The primary issue is usually getting people together and their connections being unstable. But it works and it often lets people that mightn't be as confident in person RP better if ya use text and you have a constant log of everything said

I tried to find pbp group for about three months. Turns out it's harder than to win a data entry job on odesk. And if I could write good enough to get in at least half groups I applied to I could as well go to said odesk or somewhere else and earn decent money by writing.

I almost exclusively run and play games over Skype, with voice for tabletalk and text for actual play. Whoever's running the game does all the rolls behind the screen, and we all trust each other enough that GM abuse has never been an issue. It's slow and inefficient, but the benefit is that we have a record of all of the content of our sessions in case we have need of a text log (or want to write up a storytime).

Found a recruitment ad for a skype text campaign in a custom setting. Got accepted, still playing with them three years later, lead to my running a few of my own skype camaigns.

I personally prefer skype text campaigns over IRL campaigns as I think writing things out encourages better RP, but it could just be because in IRL I only play with newbs.

There are people who play over various online programs but they all pale in comparison to playing live, at a table. You don't get the character interaction over skype, you don't know when someone's looking at you and not someone else over skype, You don't get anywhere near the level of body language cues over skype.

In short you can, but it's a far more enjoyable experience by finding a table. Check your local gaming stores for groups looking for people and also check red dit for group finding. There's lots of groups out there looking for more players.

Okay, so I feel like I have the opposite problem to you guys.

I play on and off with groups of friends, we have fun as friends, but not everyone is committed to the game or to role-playing. The reason we're in the same room playing a game is because we all know and like each other, not because we're all good at or particularly invested in the game.

Now, if I had an excessive supply of people to play with (whether online or at a popular gaming store) then wouldn't that mean I have more choice? I can play with people who really get into it. Or, if people get scarily into it, I can play with people who aren't as crazy.

It will take years to find a good group either way.

Trust me, I recently put a ton of effort into putting together a game specifically designed to weed out players and only take applicants who were into heavy-roleplay, slow-paced character-based campaigns and who wanted to play compelling characters through a narrative.

I got plenty of interest, more than I'd expect, but the problem is even though the people were fine on paper, when it came time to actually play what I got was a group of lethargic and unenthusiastic piles of nothing who all want to play antisocial loners.

As a DM, I wouldn't even mind new players or anything, I would almost literally kill for a group of people who were actually enthusiastic and wanted to do some real roleplaying.

The problem is, it's an either/or thing.

Freaks and Geeks, it's on netflix now. It's just one season, but it's really good. There's not a lot of D&D in there though, the pic is from the last episode and I'm pretty sure that's the only time they play it.

It depends. Want to play DnD with its limiting mechanics and steep learning curve? That's quite expensive. To start off you get away with just the player guide, but you soon need splats and expansions. And they change the rules every few years to sell new books.

If you want a good system, there's quite a few to choose from. Many will run you maybe $20 for a pdf or two. Many are free entirely, virtually all have a free version to download and try.

It depends on what kind of game you want to play, balanced gamist or narrative, character centered or more concerned with combat, something to flesh out a PC, or something more suited to one shots, ... ?

Visit the D&D5e general, there you will find a mega link with all the D&D5e books in PDF format. If you like the game, buy the D&D5e Players Handbook. If you got more money to spare you could add a Dungeon Masters Guide & a Monster Manual to that. You can also pick up a more basic version of the D&D5e rules for free on the the official website. In my experience D&D5e is the easiest and one of the most enjoyable versions of D&D yet, and its great for new players!

Don't be scared to try other systems though, there are TTRPG systems for pretty much every setting. Want more realistic & gritty combat & a low-magic world? RuneQuest has you covered! Want to explore dark mysteries and get eaten by eldritch horrors? Play Call of Cthulhu. Like Sci-Fi? Well there's a ton of sci-fi systems out there!

D&D is often just the start, its the most well known TTRPG, but surely not the only one! Still, D&D is great for your kitchen sink fantasy games, and can even do some other stuff as well. But for Sci-Fi, apocalypse, modern and all those other non-fantasy settings you're better off picking another system. Perhaps even for fantasy, its probably the most wide spread genre in the whole TTRPG scene. Anyway, just have fun anon, whether you play D&D, RQ, Traveller or Paranoia.

Like I can get the whole idea of wanting to play something OSR or Dungeon Crawl Classics because "fuck your story, I can just read a novel", but I don't get those kinds of gamers who want to play those kinds of characters. "I stab the guard" or "my character is half-demon" isn't interesting. Do interesting things during play.

Let me put it this way: I've been DMing for fucking ever. All I really want is a group like Critical Role. I know that's ridiculous, but I just want people who are enthusiastic, invested, and actually enjoy what they're doing enough that they want to put more effort into it. I'll run a game, openly admitting I'm not the best GM, but I'll try to lay some ground rules to make things more fun. Table chatter is fine, but try to speak in-character, it'll make things more immersive and fun. Keep track of your character's abilities, equipment, spells, etc. that takes weight off my shoulders. Learn what your powers and spells do, so we keep things moving at a fast pace.

What do people do? Discuss things entirely out-of-character, constantly ask me questions like, "How many arrows did I fire again?", play on their phones, and talk about how great Critical Role is. Not that I have a divine right to perfect players, but if I saw all these cool YouTube videos and they got me psyched for playing RPGs, I'd at least try to emulate what they do and get the same experience.
