Out of interest, what is the general tech/power level in this game? Fuffwise, I mean. One the one hand, some of the TAGs and heavy infantry seem insane, while the basic infantry are often just normal dudes with rifles.

Is the setting full GitS? How well do the setting's troopers compare to other popular sci-fi stuff - clone troopers, spartans, spess mehreens, etc?

I ask because it seems like things swing the gamut from mundane to totally bonkers. When I read bits of fluff it seems like a bunch of haqqislam soldiers shouldn't have a chance again, say, one of the aleph cyber assassin types.

Maybe not quite GitS in the cybernetic sense. But in some ways, greater. It's just starting to creep past cyberpunk into transhumanstuff. Or maybe the slightly wobbly 'it exists for some people' Gibsonian tech levels with really crazy shit existing within the setting, just outside the scope of the vast majority of the population.

The basic infantry have a whole range of tech advances we don't really see because it's all relative. Combi rifles have a whole range of smartgun style options, and obviously the basic armour seems to be in common use, so presumeably that works pretty well. Nanotechnology's off the charts. To the point where there's already been brutal conflict involving WMD grey goo weapons, leading to weaponised nanotech's banning. Not that anyone cares about THAT.

The big thing is the existance of a true, probably strong, AI, in the form of Aleph. There's also FTL travel, for a given value of FTL. Interstellar trade and colonies are a thing, at least.

Another big thing are cubes. Effectively they're high powered memory storage units that most developed world people have implanted into their heads. It records all of your thoughts and subconcious impulses. When you die, they can extract it, and hypothetically, upload your conciousness into a new body. Maybe a regular sort of clonal body, or a high tech superhuman Lhost. This process requires SILK though, which only the Haqqislamites can produce in anything approaching commercial quantities. It's almost certainly something only found, or produceable on Bourak.

Totally not a Dune reference there.

Well, a lot of the Hassasins effectively have Bene Gesserit style martial arts training. But as far as the regulars are concerned, they've existed in sufficiently tough conditions that they're naturally great soldiers. Again, totally not a Dune reference. There's also the usual range of power armour and cybernetic enhancement. Remember a lot of those Aleph types are near naked. And they STILL have HI level stats, and of course a lot of them have either Dogged, or No Wound Incapacitation. Which is terminator tier pain resistance. Most Aleph cyber assasin types are as strong as killy as power armoured high tech soldiers, without the armour, and are fully capable of fighting with limbs blown off, etc.

But Aleph's operatives are very dangerous. They're skilled, well equipped, utterly driven, and have access to the most resources of anyone that isn't the combine.

So I just bought 300 points of mrrf, 600 points of nomads, the N3 books, and a tables worth of terrain kits.

These rules though, what the fuck?
Is it me or are they well past over-complicated. Ive been reading the N3 rulebook and theres no way I can introduce this game to my group. How do people learn, keep track, and enjoy this overweight (morbidly obese) ruleset?

Just start with the basics. Most of the rulebook is individual special rules, ammo types, etc. The core rules are pretty elegant.

It's way easier than it seems. See if you can dig up someone who already knows the rules. That tends to be the best way, I find. Beyond that, there's some rules tutorial videos on youtubes, so give that a look if you're struggling.

The same way they keep track of most RPG systems.

Infinity's rules are not immensely complex. There's a lot of stuff on the side that you have to remember (or just keep a note of), but ultimately most things in the game work via one simple mechanic. Once you know how that works, everything else is a matter of remembering special rules and the like.

Same as every tabletop, really.

I find that it's a lot like anime (the good ones like GITS and Cowboy Bebop) in that it's really grounded and guns kill people, with the occasional unsung underdog getting the trick shot and saving the day thanks to crits

It's also a lot like ASOIAF in that nobody is safe. You get shot at you probably die and the same rule applies to a nameless french metrocop as much as to Joan of Arc

Well there is no Infinity playerbase here, so I dont have access to someone already familiar with the rules. That is a role that will have to be filled by me.

My other question is regarding unit profiles. The N3 book doesnt have them all, where do I find the rest? And how do players reference their units during a game since there is no compendium sorted by faction, or individual faction profiles sorted together.

Well, there's always going to be a fluff crunch divide, but I'd say it's less than something like 40k.

One of the key parts I think is armour. I know Infinity guns tend to fire pretty shit hot rounds, but I suspect that a regular rifle isn't going to do much to a TAG. So from that PoV, I think the resiliance/offensive ability has been somewhat compressed. Basic infantry and elites and TAGs are all reasonably close to one another in the game, whereas I suspect in the fluff HI are significantly more resiliant.

Thing is, that -is- represented pretty well in the game, in a sense. HI tend to have good armour and multiple wounds, and TAGs even more so. So it's a lot more than the Space Marine/Guardsman fluff/crunch gap, but HI on the table are pretty tough buggers that require sustained attack to get rid of. And they're far more permissive of a crap roll, or a momentary mistake/effective attack. BBy the same token their attack values and weapons aren't hugely different to smaller units, but it all adds up, particularly with the F2F system.

So they have defacto effectiveness gap, even if mathematically it should be more pronounced.

To specifically answer your question, I can see a Daysus that was caught close up getting hosed down pretty effectively, although given how OPERATOR the Daysus was, and their loadouts, I'd say it's more likely that the Ghulam'd either be shot before realising what was going on, or get lured into a mine, or ambushed close up with some matrix tier gun fu and nanopulser goo. But that's more of an OPERATOR vs Pleb sort of situation.

Asura on the other hand, I can see being more like Arnie. Small arms bouncing off them, limbs ripped off and they still advance. Bulletproof, for lack of a better word.

I think people want codexes: PanO Codex, Yu Jing Codex... so they have just to keep track of their stuff, but most of the stuff is generic, not faction exclusives, and that is why INFINITY is balanced.

But who cares? I've been looking at this all these years... all these 40K and Warmachine players just wishing that their miniatures look like those INFINITY models...

More like sophisticated. The core rules are easy, and most of the specials tend to be permutations of the core mechanisms. And I'd dispute the 40k/WMH comparison because both of those systems tend to rely on their units snowflakeyness rather than core mechanics and stats. They've got a lot of hardwired combo mechanics and there's a lot of units that have either unique, or highly specific combations that radically alter their usage. Infinity doesn't have anything like the same degree.

There might be a lot of special abilities, but the degree to which they alter the fundamental nature of the game is very different.

Huh.

I always thought they delivered their nanite payload as an aerosol. Like, you see a spray of what appears to be compressed vapor, and then whatever it hits is disintegrated as the nanite swarm rapidly slips through the bonds between particles, tearing whatever they strike apart on a molecular level.

Grey Goo might have been hyperbole on my part. Your imagining sounds about right. Cutter nanites, in Shadowrun terms. Hence the BTS attribute being used. But the nanotech wars apparently were pretty hardcore shit, so I'd be very surprised if self-replication wasn't dabbled with at least a few times.

Of course it might be a combination of the two. You get misted with a nano seed, which then replicates inside you using your meat as fuel, until there's just a pile of flesh goop and nanites on the floor. Possibly at that point, the nanites self-combust.

I don't doubt that different nanopulsers probably use different mechanisms of use. For all we know they're just carcerand style nanites that release toxins directly into your bloodstream through your skin.

Infinity's certainly less cinematic, at least. Characters tend to be equivalents of another unit, with a few extra bits. More like Warmachine solos, or UAs, perhaps. Or 40k Veteran Sergeants. Powerful, but not really plot sheilded within the game.

And of course Malifaux and WMH are extremely character driven in terms of their fundamental army paradigm mechanics.

Yeah, but nothing makes you remember a game like your specops losing his main gun to a flubbed plasma check, but surviving the regular damage, and then double critting the Charontid 4 inches away. Then spending the last order to move up and push the objective button.

Eh, if a game's lost to a single crit, then it was already extremely close. And for that matter, there's no saying that you wouldn't have fucked the armour roll anyway. Any side that loses when a single order or figure or attack goes pear shaped was probably going to lose anyway.

It's surprisingly common that people get into sectorials before the main faction. I suppose the fluff or army options of the more narrow segment is more interesting that the fluff for the entire faction.

NCA's particualrly bad for that. They're pretty much a lineup of the various PANO SMASH units that people tend to play PanO for, with the added benefit of allowing you to link up your order monkies.

Personally, I'm of the opposite vein. I don't like either of the current Nomad sectorials. Having the ability to mix and match jarringly different kinds of units from all over the Nomad Nation is the core of the faction for me.

I am entirely against you on this. Crits ignoring armour means HI are double plus good, as that extra wound is a bonus bit of insurance. Also as was previously said, if your plan falls apart after one crit you're shite anyway.

I personally agree with you on this (maybe auto win BS rolls with AP?) but I know the subject of crits is very divisive. I know it goes both ways but nothing sucks more than you consistently playing better than your opponent in terms of positioning and maximising modifiers only to get your ass handed to you because your opponent keeps rolling crits and there is absolutely NOTHING you can do to stop your guys getting insta killed.

M-hm. Infinity suffers from the same thematic shit Warmachine suffers from. They have a theme that gets more and more prevalent over the years that it starts being a detracting element from the rest of the sculpt.

For Warmahordes, this was/is the shoulderpads and pauldrons. Thankfully that is being reigned in since Mark 2.

For Infinity, this is the generic look of their armour. Because they're at such a small scale, every models ends up looking like a mass of flat surfaces as there's no chance to put distinctive fine details on there.

Personally, I'm not sure if this is a compliment or not, but to me there's not too distinct of a difference in the sculpt quality between the hand sculpted 2010 and the 2014 digital sculpts. Could be a testament to the craftsmanship of their traditional sculptors, or it could be a note that their digital sculptors really do need to brush up a bit. Though, again, at that scale it gets rather difficult for molds to catch every single detail without having to resort to deep lines, which jumble the surface details even more.

Looks good, i would swap one of the chaksa with the clipsos tho, then bring the clipsos over when something dies, or jus use 3 orders on it, because that second group has no need for orders as it currently stands

Or where particular ammunition is involved. Im looking a you viral/shock/DA/T2/EXP. A single critical is mitigated by en engineer or doctor at a cost of 1 order and maybe command token.
Essentially you should factor the possibility of failure into your order expenditure sequence at least where failure is possible, stacking odds so that you can guarantee 100% mathematical success is usually very order intensive but there are ways.

Maybe make the Sakiel lieutenant, swap the calipsos for one with swarm grenades, and give the boarding team another weapon so you can get the most out of your SWC.

This is how I would have done it personally.
