Humans in 40k, especially dogmatic toaster worshipers, get scared by things that they don't understand. They scream heresy at shadows and curiosities because, at least in 40k, there is every possibility that it COULD be a daemon infested pile of facerape.
Even worse would be not screaming heresy at first contact, only to later on find out that it was heresy, and be accused of being in collaboration.
