Does Charisma affect other people's perception of you, or your actual physical appearance/charm?

If there is a character with 20 charisma, are they a sexy smooth-talking heartthrob, or are they just a hobo that everyone sees as a heartthrob? And does it matter if that 20 charisma is natural or aided by items/magic?

Charisma is most commonly defined as force of personality. It doesn't matter how ugly you are; all that matters is that people listen to you.

You can be pretty, but if you're high Charisma it means you know how to make that work for you.

You can also be ugly and have high Charisma. There are lots of people who are attractive and magnetic despite their looks.

I always thought of charisma as being a combination of personal magnetism+appearance. That's why in some old games, critical wounds could leave ugly scars that reduced your charisma.

Not really, >>43375495 is pretty spot on. Charisma is your personality and likeability. I've seen ugly, overweight motherfuckers pull really attractive dates through sheer force of personality before. It's something you're partially born with, and developed and trained.

You could be a fighter with a dramatic scar that makes people take note of you. High charisma would let you make the most of that attention.

I think what might hurt charisma is a plain and forgettable appearance. Think 47 from the Hitman games (whos supposedly engineered to be unremarkable).

He's ugly as fuck, but it doesn't matter because he knows exactly what to say all the time. In fact, you can see past his ugliness/horrible birth defects to the amazing individual underneath, he's not actually ugly, he's a beautiful person.

Or something like that, he's appealing through who he is, so much so that physical attractiveness doesn't matter anymore.
