/tg/, what's your opinion of tabletop games over Roll20, but text-only? I've been trying to convince my group that we should at least have voice, but it's not selling too well with them. From my experience with text-only (including this group) there's next to no emotional involvement on anyone's part, and everyone gets bored of it/sick of it far faster. What do you guys do?

Personally I prefer text only, as it's far easier to stay in character and less immersion breaking. The downside is it takes fucking forever for any scene longer than two sentences to play out

It's slower, yes, but there's more time to really mull over things, and the text format is less awkward in some ways, like everyone pretending to voice act. If the players are into the game, they'll spend a lot of time on 'fluff' details like behavior, mannerisms, etc., that can be posted without impacting the scene, so you can get a very rich scenario rolling.

Text is great. Makes it clear who is saying what, (if you use portraits) and you can review what hasbeen said for clarity so you don't need to ask as many questions.

my experience is that it is perfectly good for roleplay, but you get about 1/4 as much done in the same time because of delays.

I like text. It's chill. It makes your game into more of a writer's circle than improv theatre, slows the pace way down, and encourages people to play characters they wouldn't consider trying to act out. That might suit you or it might not.

Plus I don't have to hear my players' awful american geek-voices (love yo uguys)

It'd be even faster if, after the audio was converted to text and sent, it would be converted back to audio when it was received. Someone should get on that.

It's arguably more "immersive" because people are typically better at writing than they are at voice acting.

But it's slower, means a host of distractions will plague your game, and there's way less of a human element to the game.

The tier list pretty much goes
IRL > Voice > Text > Shit > Forum > Diarrhea > Quest threads
