If you are seriously into gobots, find a copy of Machine Robo Wedge. Its a compendium of everything related to machine robo.

Personally. I have a pretty nice size collection probably about 100 pieces or so? Inlcuding Puzzler and 6 or 7 rock lord.

I also have transformers out the ass as well, i'm more a fan of all transforming robots rather than just one version of the idea. I've always enjoyed gobots/mahcine robo's way they favor the alt modes over the robot modes, instead of the other way around with old diaclone/transformers.

Besides, TF fans are just butt-hurt that GoBots is A) more similar to G1 than they'd like and B) introduced alot of conventions that they suddenly loved when BW, Animated, IDW, or whatever did it.

And I guess the Japan-only minibot recolor set which were IMPLIED to be Gobots characters having crossed a dimensional barrier, but they were only superficially colored like who they were supposed to be. Except Bugbite, who was made white in both that and the Botcon set, because, well, Bugbite was originally yellow just like Bumblebee.

That's the thing, Challenge of the Go-Bots isn't bad.

I'm not saying it's great, but compared to all the other 80's cartoons I've watched in the past five years, it was one of the better ones.

As if I can cite some magical encyclopedia that "proves" TF fans have praised/accepted/requested:

small casts
females with characterization beyond "pink mommy"
mirror universe (and other Trek-isms)
robots with teeth
human POV provided by adult astronauts instead of annoying kids (including two non-stereotypical blacks)
a consistent backstory
"anime-accurate" toys
simpler "play-friendly" designs
low retool/recolor ratio
combiners with integrated parts
unorthodox alternate modes (monsters, rocks)

The Guardians were away for days/weeks, allowing the Renegades ample time to frame them with actual attacks, not some staged "attack" videotaped by a crooked local politician. How is there even an argument going on in this thread? Gobots as a toyline was as good as the Transformers product at the time. Where Tonka fucked up was with the supporting media. The Gobots cartoons, comics, books and annuals all pretty much sucked.

And yes, we can find instances of a specific Gobots episode being better than a specific Transformers episode. The point is that overall, Transformers had the better show, comic, etc. It's why Transformers is still going strong thirty years later and Hasbro owns Tonka.

Moving on from retarded arguments, Bandai's masterpiece-esque Machine Robo stuff looks good. I just wish the third party companies who've done Cy-Kill and Crasher had given them full on Gobots cackling faces. Two of the most entertaining characters in that show.

The books are no worse than the TF books. The comics...you mean the ones in the short lived GoBots magazine or the ones published in Argentina? If anything, Tonka's non-TV strategy was incredibly unfocused.

And nothing in Challenge is as bad as the steaming pile that is post movie G1. God, it's like Hasbro hired the Jizwares of animation to crap that out.

It seems we're just wildly changing which aspect exactly about Gobots vs Transformers we're arguing about.

Challenge of the Go-Bots was largely animated by one studio (I think), so it was much more consistent in animation quality than Transformers, but that has never been contested. I thought we were talking about the writing.

GoBots/Machine Robo had some fun stuff. They were very simple but had a certain charm about them. I still like a lot of them.

OK. The writing for S3+ is pretty bad too. It frequently lacks any of the pacing found in pre-movie episodes. The characterization is also much thinner and I feel the alien backdrops rarely add anything even when the aliens aren't saddled with obnoxious voices (like that awful cracked pig man in particular). There's none of the tongue in check "it's a living" humor either.

There are parts I like. Galvatron is really entertaining. But it's saddled with such poor animation and helter skelter plotting.

The truth is that 90% of the Challenge complaints are derived from Scooter being deemed uncool by the mob in grade school. The plots aren't any dumber and the characterizations aren't any thinner. It's a decent show, particularly for its time, but it doesn't have many defenders so it's an easy target to beat up on for street cred.

I actually think the S3 episodes are way better than the first two. But I didnt grow up with G1. S3 feels way more like the contemporary action cartoons I'm used to,where as 1/2 feels like a lot of pre-Batman TAS cartoons.

Yep, Challenge was a good show. Kids loved it. That's why we enjoyed all the Gobots series since then: Animal Fights, Animal Apparatus, Flotilla, Gobotron, etc. Just a shame about the terrible Paul W.S. Anderson movies.

I have watched the Hanna Barbera toon, and I'm not the guy who suggested localizing MR. The only thing that Challenge of the Gobots had going for it was Cy-Kill's voice.

Except that's wrong. S3 actually had some of the best writing in the old G1 series, certainly better than some of the dreck in S2. Webworld, Dweller in the Depths, Dark Awakening, Ghost in the Machine, Fight or Flee, to name a few. The only reason some people hate it largely because of the change in cast (no more Optimus and Megatron) and the shitty Akom animation of most episodes.

I'll give you Webworld and TRoOP. But the rest has dialogue and pacing and consistency problems all over. Even GitM/SG is nearly sunk by the writers bit knowing where theyre going through most of it. And you can't handwave away the awful animation.
