Because stupid SW became a cultural touchstone for many Americans/Euros/Asians to the point that ANH/ESTB was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress. No other major science fiction franchise barring perhaps Trek has that sort of cultural cache.

Because you can't just "make" one.
Lucas probably did not plan for all of this to happen either when he started to write the story.
That's also the reason why so many things fail that were only made to be the "next big hit", it feels forced and often they don't really get how something gets popular.

It "happens" and it also happens over time.
Maybe something we now regard as "nice" will be in the future some crazy, known by everyone thing that is widely regarded as THE thing to describe pop culture during our time.

Because Hollywood will no longer take risks for new ideas. All they want is rehashed clones or sequels. In 1977 Star Wars was a crazy risk, not looking like other scifi of the era at all.

Even merchandise wise, everyone's iffy about new stuff nowadays. You hardly get a good strong dedicated toyline for a brand new movie anymore. The big push only comes for the sequel.

Pretty much this. If you want to see a similar phenomenon look at Harry Potter.

Star Trek influenced the Science Fiction world.

Star Wars influenced the whole world and pretty much defined the modern film industry.

Super soldier serum, powered robot suits, alien species, time travelers, mutant genes... It's predominantly sci-fi. Marvel is a bigger sci-fi franchise than Star Wars. Hell, Marvel even made Star Wars comics.

Star wars wouldn't exist without star trek. The love of spaceships, space, laser guns, and all that started with trek.

I love star wars and have very little interest in star trek but even if it isn't as popular I think it's extremely culturally significant and really jump started sci-fi.

Star wars did change movies forever though, but in horrible horrible ways. It showed people that theres money to be made making stupid shit for kids and making toys and loads of sequels. Not that that was star wars fault or intention (not till rotj at least) I guess as people who collect toys we should be thankful.

the rest of the video was the point though. People will mindlessly consume anything with George Lucas' spooge all over it. That is why nothing bigger has come along. Lucas went outside of the industry to get his films made, now star wars is the industry

I don't know about that. You might make a case that it would not have been as popular, but even that would be pushing it IMO. And Star Trek owes a lot to previous Sci-Fi shows too. It hardly started the genre, though it certainly helped it reach broad appeal here in the states. Star Trek of course had a massive influence.

That aside, Star Trek wasn't an influence for Lucas. Wars and Trek have very few similarities aside from a common setting. Lucas was inspired by old adventure serials (like Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and Sinbad) westerns, WWII films, and Kurosawa films.

20th Century Fox didn't even have faith in the movie they thought it was a waist of money and that it would be a horribly huge flop. Before the movie was even released apparently all studio executives and big wigs in the entertainment industry including George Lucas thought the movie was going to be a huge flop the only person who seemed to have any fath in the move Steven Spielberg
