A lot of the gundam OVAs and other standalone animes don't do this, it isn't impossible for a new macross series not to do it as well. Especially when the character design/overall animation was better in 1994.
So, yeah, a 2015 anime should mimic an anime from 1994. Unless you have shit taste and actually believe the stupid everyone has super thin everything and the worst clothing in the world style is a benefit to anything, in which case you're just part of the problem. It's essentially how 12 year olds draw anime, and somehow it got headway and now alot of major studios follow the same guidelines.
