>>1044155I was there in 2012 for 7 weeks. I was working in a mining town called Tabubil and had a connecting flight through Port Moresby. The airport there is insane. Crowds of short, ugly black people jammed up against the counters yelling, trying to gtfo, absolute chaos. I was the scared shitless white guy who didn't know that you are supposed to just push your way to the front. This was when I missed my connecting flight and I ended up staying in a hotel arranged by the mining company I was working for. The place was (converted to USD) $700/night and a beer was $12. It was no better than a Motel 6 but it had armed guards and razor wire. I spent some time wandering around the area and the word "bleak" doesn't do it justice.
In hindsight, it was actually a pretty cool adventure. Tabubil is really not much better, but at least it is significantly safer.
PNG, the food is horrid, there is no entertainment, the people are snarly, miserable and ugly and they hate white people.
