I'd reckon going through rural areas anywhere north of Chicago should be perfectly fine as far as racism towards foreign brown people goes (provided you don't make an ass of yourself by talking about politics or religion).
Rural areas in most middle states are going to be Christian, ignorant, and only mildly racist. They're much more likely to talk about you behind your back than do anything overtly racist. Key point is not to agree or appear to agree with anything liberal. Try not to use big words, they might think you're showing off or condescending.
Once you're in true Southern states like Missouri, Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, etc. you should be careful about where you're staying. Honestly the people are pretty much the same as described above, but you're going to have more bad apples around that might feel like vandalizing your shit if you have a faux pas.
Also if you look "Muslim", i.e. Middle Eastern, you're probably not going to have a great time.
