I doubt I'll get an answer here, as my problem is very specific, but I'll give it a try. So I moved to Ireland on a working holiday visa and I just got word that I've been hired. The conditions on my visa state that I must hold a GNIB (garda national immigration bereau) card in order to be employed. The predicament is, they cost 300€ to get, while I only have 900€ left in savings. Essentially, I don't want to pay for this stupid card. Should I just tell them I'm in the process of acquiring one, and hope they'll accept that? Or do you think this could compromise me getting the job.

Brainstorming road trip destinations in driving distance of central Europe

No.1042994 ViewReplyReportDelete
Here's the deal, /trv/. I don't come here often. I'm not normally a travelling person. Home sweet home and all. But I do enjoy driving a great deal, and my situation will allow me to expand this hobby in the foreseeable future. By this I mean that I'm hoping to take vacations by car specifically with local roads and driving enjoyment at my destination in mind. But I don't want to have to drive there for thousands of kilometers on boring highways either, so I'm looking for interesting regions within a certain distance of home. To illustrate I will attach a map in the next post.

Have anyone ever been to Slovenia?

Me and three friends are studying abroad in Budapest, the plan is to rent a car and leave this friday for Ljubljana. I have traveled a lot through central/eastern Europe but Slovenia has always passed bellow my radar and remains uncharted.

TripAdvisor is full of interesting locations, but seeing as we are leaving on Friday morning and we only have about two and a half days to spend there, I would appreciate some input on how we can make the most of it. I would also love some general advice in terms of prices, locals, etc.

We are all in our mid 20s, love beer, wine, partying, music, architecture and history.

Thanks

New to travel

I haven't spent much time on this board, but it seems like the right place to learn. My dream is to sail and travel around the world, but I haven't been able to get anywhere. I'm looking for a job that pays well enough to afford hotels, food, and maybe a little bit of fun while also allowing enough time for it. I'm willing to pick up and learn almost anything as long as it lets me do what I said. Again, not sure if this is the right board, but I'm looking to do mainly sailing.

Hostel Experiences

The idea of staying in a hostel intrigues me, any funny / bad experiences with hostels? How can you fall asleep and trust the other people in the room to not be fucking psychos that will kill you in your sleep, or trust them to not to steal your shit? How does it work? Do you store your money in your socks and hope for the best?

Tips for travelling during Winter / December? Planning for about 10 days wander around Europe towards start of December. Anything I should note? I live in South Wales, UK so I'm bretty used to cold weather. Basically all I need to know is am I going to freeze to death if I'm wearing something like a shirt and hoody? Countries I'd like to get to would probably be France, Belgium, Poland, Germany, maybe Netherlands.

Is my travel plan possible?

No.1042163 ViewReplyReportDelete
I have been wanting to go to Taiwan for a pretty long time since I met a ton of friends who live there online. Seems like a really interesting place, and I feel like it's a good gateway to Asia.

I have about 6,000 saved up, and my plan was to rent a cheap as fuck airbnb room with a buddy (he's not sure he's going since he only has $3,000) and stay in it in taipei for like 20 days, and get to know the city. We both really wanted to tour around and get drunk every night since we are only 18.

After we stay in Taipei for a long time, we thought we'd backpack and take trains all around Taiwan and stay in hostels on the way, and see all of the nature, and go on long hikes etc. I'm honestly not sure how long it would take, and how much it would cost to do something like that.

A cheap Airbnb room wouldn't cost us more than $400 each.

After travelling around Taiwan we figured maybe we'd get another airbnb for like 10 days, and then fly to either Japan, China, or Hong Kong. My friend really wants to go to Japan, but he's poor so I feel like it would be WAY too expensive to travel there.

I was thinking it would be better to visit Shanghai and backpack around there. Maybe try to take a boat from Taiwan to a part of China, and then make our way through Fuzhou, Wenzhou, Hangzhou, until we get there. Not sure if there would possibly be a train or busses we could take. And not sure if those smaller places would have cheap accomodation for us?

Honestly not sure how much this could all cost overall. We plan on really stretching our money as much as possible, getting drunk is the only pleasure we plan on spending on. We are going to try to do as much as possible for free. We are also really into urban exploring, and climbing things, and we have some good filming equipment, so we might climb some buildings/construction sites.

Pic related, me and my mate, do you think we'll do ok in Asia? Thanks guys!
