I didn't see a thread like this so I figured what the hell.

What are the best jobs that allow or require travel?

I'm in contract archeology. I can really only speak to my experience but I've been "shovelbumming" for the last year, tooling around from job to job trying to find a place to settle. Even though I've found a local firm to work with I know a lot of you /trv/ folks'd like to know about jobs that's keep you on the move. Well "shovelbumming" definitely does that.

TEFL work fits the bill, and so does online work. I know lots of people run online businesses where they can work remotely.

What's shovelbumming? Tell me more about the lifestyle, I'm interested.

I do contract work for international development projects--basically being a nerd-for-hire for a couple of big international NGOs. Nowadays I'm mostly working remotely/online, but I have periods where I'm on the ground for a few weeks at a time working on projects with local partners. So I don't necessarily see that much when I'm abroad (traveling for work is nothing like traveling for fun), but I get well fed, lots of interesting glimpses of places, a few free weekends, and lots of airline miles. It's a good lifestyle for me. I've done a bit of corporate-charity work, too, which is less enjoyable overall but pays better.

As an undergrad, nothing relevant or useful. But I have two master's degrees. Postgraduate education is basically required for interesting NGO work. But fields that are potentially relevant as a starting point (and which could open doors to fellowships/paid internships) include political science, economics, or any social science program hard enough to give you experience with surveys and data analysis. I also know a few anthropologists, a bunch of lawyers and MBAs, and some international relations people. But it depends a lot on what kind of projects you want to be involved in--some NGOs do mostly health stuff, some do mostly education, some do sanitation/water/environment stuff. So technical expertise in a specific field with development relevancy is always a good idea, too.

On paper, mostly monitoring and evaluation, either designing M&E systems for projects that haven't been started yet, or less often evaluating projects at the midpoint or end. In practice it's lots of very technical writing and editing, and a bit of surveying. My graduate education is in policy and public administration (dual MPA/MPP program), but it was only tangentially relevant to my actual work. Most of the technical stuff I do I learned on the job and through a few additional courses.

International Business Degree with a focus in something else (Accounting, logistics, management) allow for travel. I's contract ehavy and project to project, though. Unless you get with an internationl corp. like KBR and can jump to different projects within a corp.

There is a base in Djibouti. I am sure that one is public knowledge. There are more that should be dark red but I am not 100% sure if they should be mentioned, though they are light red, for the most part.

Being in the military is not a good way to travel. I was in the navy for 4 years. A normal port visit is 2-3 days and you probably have to work one of those days. When you are just starting out you have to return to the ship by midnight. I went to, Haiti, Brazil, Peru, South Korea, and Singapore. Spent most of the time in Newport News, VA and San Diego.

That's your experience and Sea Duty in the Navy is hardest to travel the way /trv/ travels maybe. But I have friends in the Navy and Marines stationed in Spain, Italy, Bahrain, and Japan, amongst other places, and use those as a base to travel Europe and Asia. Not to mention the 30 days of leave a year on tip of the numerous "72s" and "96s" or the TAD/TDY trips, where you are paid to travel. I am in the Marines so my experience is different, though related, but I have traveled for work and leisure in my over a decade and a half in.

Im an International certified arborist VIA the ISA and have been working in the field for 3 years now. Iv been doing some research and it seems that if your a certified arborist you can pretty much get a job anywhere as we are in high demand apparently. Going to go work in New Zealand after my working holiday visa is finished and see how that goes.

It all depends on your work environment. I got out of the Navy with 60 days of leave on the books because they would never let us take it. I could have reenlisted for shore duty in Italy or Japan but I was totally over with it by that point. Nothing like hitting a port with all of your buddies and slamming the town though.

Using the experience that I gained in engineering + a degree, I now make enough money to travel comfortably. Its all win.

You are actually supporting my point, which is if you are USA .mil you can travel now, or travel later. If you have job that restricts you in the short term, those are typically the same jobs that have more travel at higher ranks. If you get out, they are typically the ones that get you travel related civilian jobs. So like you said, it's all win-win.

Honestly im either climbing trees all day doing pruning or removals or working in woodlots flopping trees.

Your friend should take the test as soon as hes ready not only does it give you better employment opportunities but it also gives you the chance to work abroad like ill be doing soon.

Doing advance work for a high-level officials (government or otherwise) requires one to travel a lot, domestically and internationally. Lots of work when on the road, but downtime can be really nice.

Seems like it could be useful for an org that does disaster recovery stuff--figuring out how to get supplies to refugee camps, etc. Of course, developing world crisis environments probably look nothing like anything you studied in b-school, but I assume there are some similar elements in play.

I'm in Marines so austere environments are no issue. In the logistics field at that, hence my major. But I am on the downhill slope of my military career depending on when I decide to retire

I don't do disaster recovery work myself, but know people who do. Ex-military with a logistics MBA should be very marketable. You might also look into operations positions at NGOs in rougher places--directors of operations and/or security in conflict or recently post-conflict societies are almost always ex-military.

Can you explain the process of becoming certified as well as how you built your career?

I've looked it up and it looks like you basically only have to pass a test to be certified, but I figure there must be more to it than that.
