Going to Rome next week for a full 7 days with the GF

We have the main things on the to do list;
- Vatican
- Castel Sant Angelo
- Pantheon
- Villa Borghesi
- Trevi Fountain
- Capuchan Crypts
- Coliseum

We are also taking a full day trip to Pompeii and Naples. Any of you wise /trv/ explorers care to list any must do things in Rome.

Im also curious about eating out. We arent too fond of paying for overpriced crap on the main Piazzas and Squares and like to venture in and around back streets. Any suggestions ?

That is a LOT to fit in so work out your piorities first in case you haven't got the time to do everything.

Sant Angello you can see from a bus tour, highly recommend the green lines one along with their day trip to pompeii and their vatican trip (organized tours only to access the Sistine Chapel.

Ditch the crypts and do to the capuchin museum and ossery (pic related) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capuchin_Crypt
Much easier access, in the city centre, not far from the trevi fountain and the spanish steps, and much, much spookier and better presented.

The Trevi is probably still under restoration and drained of water so don't be too disappointed, visit breifly so you can at least say you've seen it but make your way to Piazza Navona ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piazza_Navona ) the fountains are actually more impressive there than the Trevi anyway.

The Pantheon is so calm and chill inside you wouldn't believe, especially if you go there in the morning and if you or your girlfriend like Audrey hepburn films you might want to take a coffee outside in the cafe to the right of the entrance (as you look towards it) as this location was used for a few scenes in Roman Holiday.

Villa borghesi I never saw the apeal of to be honest, but if your heart is really set on it I guess...

You'll kick yourself if you don't do the palitine hill and forum while you're out there though, it is right next to the coliseum and is the most Roman thing in the whole world.

As regards nice places to eat on a budget it depends where you are in the city. My wife and I stayed near Santa Maria Maggiore and found a nice reasonably priced family run restaurant and the left of Via Carlo Alberto as you headed south towards the park. There are a lot of similar places dotted around the city, just avoid anywhere that has bad/faded photos of food on a menu outside the place and in the nice looking squares as they will be low quality or overpriced.

Bonus advice: take a few bottles with you when you go out as these can be replenished from the drinking water fountains you'll see around the town. A must when it is hot and the water is pure cold and lovely.

Enjoy Rome and Pompeii, when I went there with my Wife it was the best holiday of our lives.

We are staying in Monti so our apartment is right beside the Coliseum.

We had just attempted to book a full Coliseum tour, including access to the dungeons and 3rd tier but it was rejected as it was overbooked.

Looks like you actually have to phone up and book general entrance and as for dungeon access too at extra cost so we will be trying this, with the inclusive access to the Forum and Palatine Hill too.

To be honest we could probably drop the Villa Borghesi, as it was just something that kept coming up on must see lists.

I honestly can't recommend the capuchin crypt enough, there is a great modern museum about the capuchin monks before you reach the crypt where you'll see several famous paintings as well as relequires and the methods they used for self harming (for penitence not emo purposes), I'm not a catholic but I found that really interesting as well as the crypt.

Don't waste your money on a tour if you can't get access to the dungeons because the audio tour of the colluseum is perfectly fine. the Forum tours often try to pack the whole thing into an hour or two which means you miss loads of cool stuff like almost all of palatine hill, only do this if you are really pushed for time as all the signs are in English anyway. If you have done a city bus tour (I really reccomend that because it lets you see almost everything amazing in rome from a great vantage point if you can get to the top deck) most of them offer a jump the queue ticket for the Colosseum as part of the package which is really, really worth doing as it is busy all year round.

Another thing, the oposite end of the forum from the Colosseum, likely where you'll exit it, is right by Trajan's market where you'll walk past Trajan's column and the ruins of a Roman mall on your way to the taxi rank by there.

You can just walk past it and see most of it from the street, but if you really like it from outside it does have a museum and tour.

That is not a lot to fit in SEVEN days. Vatican is a half day (maybe a day if you move slow). Trevi, Pantheon, Coloseum, Borghesi could be done easily in a day. Haven't been to Sant Angelo but I've read it's not much.

As for places to eat OP, you can't go to wrong here unlike other tourist traps. Most of the food is great. Even the places in the touristy areas. Pizzas are almost always great. Hit some of the lesser known piazzas to find the best places. Look for the locals.

The Pantheon is literally one open room with next to nothing in it. If you can stay there for more than thirty minutes, congratulations, you're strange. The Coloseum might hold you up with a line, but there's not much to see once inside (we'll say 4 hours). Trevi is literally a fountain. Walk past and look at it. That leaves 5-6 hours for Borghesi and and hour or two to walk about and eat.

Guess I'm strange for taking the time to actually want to see and experience places properly rather than walk inside say "It's some room in an old building, big woop." and turn straight back around to head on to the next thing to tick off in the I-Spy Book of Rome.

Just walking around the Pantheon to take a good look at things like the tombs of Raphael, Sanzio da Urbino and Annibale Carracci along with the tombs of King Victor Emanuelle II and Umberto I. It is also the best preserved ancient Roman building still standing and the building that has been in continuous use for the longest time in all human history. Just a room, my arse.

Naples is a fucking awesome city. The people are super friendly (and the more you go south in Italy, they seem to get more laid-back).
True, watch out for pick pocketers! And be aware of them anywhere in Italy!
Depending on where you come from, the traffic will need some time getting used to, though.

Our day trip to Pompeii from Rome included a coach tour of Naples. It was quite funny because it was conducted in both English and Spanish and while the English script was all glowing and saying things like "This is our Tunnel we are so very proud of it, it is fantastic here are some stats on it..." the Spanish version was all "Well here is our tunnel, I know it isn't much to look at or pretty but here are some stats on it if you're at all interested..."

The museum has a lot of stuff from Pompeii too fragile or valuable to display in situ so should be worth a visit if you find yourself in Naples so is worth a visit if you can get there.

Tbh you can do all those things in Rome in 2 or 3 days, so you aren't going to run out of time.

Consider a couple nights down in Sorrento to explore the Amalfi Coast or up in Florence to explore Tuscany which in my opinion are far more satisfying than the queue up, take a photo and move along atmosphere of all the attractions in Rome. Rome is a must see for the historical aspect, but Italy has better experiences outside of it.

That would be an extremely poor decision.

Whether you are religious or not, standing inside St' Peters is just awe-inspiring, the architecture used to create the massive internal space is brilliantly used to make the impact even greater. And, if you are into history and art at all, the museum is something you should not miss.

(Pay some extra money for a "private" tour of the museum at night -- crowds are MUCH smaller and the experience much better, if you can afford it.)

Rome is told "the city of thousands churches" almost all have beautiful paintings or statues inside.

In vatican city there is an HUGE museum that is worth a visit.

As italian fag: do NOT go in Naples.
if you relly want to go avoid exit after dinner and leave everything of value in hotel inside the locker.
