Costs are a bit higher than other countries in the region. I've been to Mexico and Panama as well and found both of those to be slightly cheaper. If you only eat local food like I did the usual dinner plate will cost you around $5-8, but if you go out to tourist restaurants it will be $15-20. Local food is good, not outstanding like Mexican but very tasty.
Can't help with visa, I only stayed for 3 weeks so I didn't have to get one as a tourist. I'm sure workaway would help you with that.
