Is airbnb really that easy?

I'm seeing daily prices that are like $10 to $20 and in or near major cities.

It's hard not to think it's too good to be true. Is there a catch to any of this or can you really just live in someone's house for a couple weeks for like $200?

Anybody have any experience + stories?

I know you guys are half kidding, but is it really so hard to believe that someone just likes to make strangers feel at home with no other motives? You basement dwellers might not be able to comprehend this, but it's common courtesy for many people around the world, especially non-western societies, to offer hospitality and not expect much or anything in return.

Strangers invited me over to stay at their place numerous times while traveling and I didn't feel threatened even once while I did. Enjoy wearing your tinfoil hats, being cold, closed, bitter humans who don't know any empathy for others.

What's the longest you would stay at a place? I see some advertise a monthly price, so their ok with you spending a month there?

I'm trying to go to a ski area, but buildings wont rent to you unless you have a local job already. Might just pay with cc upfront and stay in a few places for a month at a time instead of formally getting a place.

But knowing what could happen causes people to be worried and rather be safe than sorry. It doesn't come from a place of recluse or bitterness man or lack of empathy, at least not for me.

You personally have encountered the hospitality of strangers, but for those that haven't, it's new untread territories man. With all things new, comes caution.

Yeah you can stay as long as you want. I know AirBNB gives off the image that they are just helping poor, young people make some extra cash by offering up their extra space to cool travelers but this is only sometimes the case. Many people on airbnb are simply running hotels and by using airbnb they don't have to buy hotel licenses or purchase a large building. My point is don't feel shy about staying in a place long term.

One of the two Airbnb hosts I stayed with in Japan this summer cooked breakfast and dinner for me every day. Really enjoyed cooking together with her and having drinks and playing guitar until late at night with her and her husband.

The other guy I stayed with was more budget, but still the guy invited me to drink and brought me all kinds of japanese sweets to try.

The only organ that was affected negatively was my liver.

Probably not, if the price and location are right.

They sort listings by 'whole apartment,' which means nobody will be there, and 'shared room' or something, where the host is expected to be around. But actually showing guests around/hosting is strictly voluntary. I don't think anyone expects it.

I don't think listings are everywhere, but check the site.

Yes, provided you can arrange some way for guests to get the key and someone to clean the place. My neighbors are away for two years, and they've kept their place rented for six months now, mostly 4-6 weeks at a time (at a staggering $250/night, no less! LOL San Francisco).

Bad reviews hit hard at the beginning, but I got only one in a year.
The house is yours, so you decide if you're keeping them at arm length or not, obviously if you share a room it's different from a whole apartment like I do. I usually welcome them, hand them the keys, explain how to get to the city center and where to buy stuff, and let them handle the rest
Everywhere in the world pretty much has an Airbnb community, obviously were talking countries where you can normally go as a tourist, not "real traveller" war torn shitholes.
I don't have experience with long term rentals but it works - as long as you are organized.
The best tips I can give you are: be friendly, take lots of pics of your place from all angles, and remember you're the only one who can decide to host someone or not

I don't get Air BnB -maybe this is just the price I pay for being American, but every time I've checked the app, the prices aren't any cheaper than they would be for a hotel room here. No point in paying $100 a night to stay at someone's house when I can do the same thing at a hotel.

i stayed in a 1bdr apartment in munich for a month for less than the price of a decent hotel for 2 weeks. sure i could have found a hotel that was cheaper than the apt, but then i wouldn't have had a kitchen or refrigerator (great ways to save money). having a living room with a couch is also pretty awesome.

airbnb is not always going to be the cheapest possible option, but if you want the amenities or are splitting costs with a group then its a great deal.

AIRBNB: some places its a cheaper alternative to a hotel, hostel ... others not, just do your homework

I airbnbd in california (the bay area) and found that it was 4 times cheaper than a regular hotel room. The thing was, I was sharing a room with other ppl, but im cool with the hostel-like atmosphere.

in general, the pricing is what it is. there is no catch, at least on the financial side of things

as with how the place actual is, and how your host will be...yeah I can imagine YMWV,

for me, all of my airbnb experiences have been fantastic

I got an apartment, 2-room, in the middle of NYC (Hunter College metro stop) for literally peanuts 2 years ago in the summer. It was comfy as fuck and I would go there again.
I also rent an apartment, 2-room, in mainland Venice for about the same as an hotel room, and I've been busy as fuck all year. You just have to look for the convenient places ahead of schedule.

Super easy. I found a place in Montreal for 13$ A night, sure it was someone's room while they were away but I didn't give two shits. Made own food, used the fridge. Let us use the washing machine, wifi, decent enough bathroom.

I just backpacked around Germany for a couple weeks and I stayed at almost all airbnb's.

When staying at a cheap place, just remember that you usually get what you pay for.

We were staying at super cheap places and every single place that we stayed in had spiders all over the place.

You probably won't have a lot of privacy (not guaranteed of course), and you will most likely have to share a bathroom.

Also getting to the place can be a bitch. We walked from the train station to their houses and sometimes we would be walking for like 6 miles. If you get a taxi or your host picks you up or something then it shouldn't be bad.

Those are just some of the shitty things associated with getting a cheap room. Airbnb is great though. It's affordable, and you meet new people, and you get to basically check out houses in a foreign country and compare them to your house.

And don't expect that anyone wants to fuck your ugly gaijin/외국 ass. People on Airbnb are interested in making new friends, learning about other countries and of course get some money to pay their rent. That's it, as strange as it may sound to Anonymous.

I've heard the same about Japan. Don't know anything about Europe/US.

So I booked rooms on airbnb twice during my Japan trip (great experience overall), and then when I tried to make a third booking it suddenly asks me to do some bullshit id verification. A scan of my driver's license, which I can't do with my shitty phone camera, and even if I could you apparently also need an active Facebook account to complete the verification.
Is this something that everyone has to do or did I fuck up somewhere? Is it possible to bypass it somehow?
I'm actually really annoyed because I was relying on airbnb to find reasonably priced accomodation in Tokyo, and now I'm stuck in these shitty capsule hotels because airbnb just suddenly threw this shit at me out of the blue...
