Banks and ATM's in Laos were unreliable. The roads were also awful and the bus I was on got stuck in a landslide twice. A landslide can seriously fuck up your schedule so allow a few days grace before your flight home.
I found most of the bottled water in Laos tasted awful. I drank just Coke and beer for like two weeks solid
Mopeds can be fun and a good way to explore, probably worth learning to ride a manual before you go (just the basics, licence isn't necessary)
tl;dr There is an established tourist rout along the path you plan to travel. Cant speak for Burma, but I assume its simmilar.
