Hey guys, first time posting here.

Me and my girlfriend were thinking of travelling to St Petersburg then onto Moscow for a week sometime in May next year. Any hints, tips or information etc that would make our trip that little bit easier?

ps both are 20, white and travelling from uk

I'm local, living in Moscow, i also can recommend towns of gold ring. There is old buildings, no muslims, churches.
If you want to go from Saint Petersburg to Moscow and you are not poor you can take high-speed train Sapsan.
Are you planning to watch everything by yourselves or touristic company?

Will learn some basic phrases over the following months - shouldn't be too hard.

We will be getting a train from st Petersburg to Moscow so is there a cheaper train or only expensive high speed? We will be doing everything for ourself so will have to rely on public transport so getting to villages may be difficult.

What is the general safety of the 2 cities? I imagine they are a lot different compared to 20 years ago. Also would you recommend going to a football game either zenit or cska?

It's not villages, there's rail roads too all-day local trains.

It's safety everywhere now. Yes, many things changed. But not all.

Sure you can watch some match. also there can be some amount of football hooligans. So be aware. If you're white and don't wave flag of opponent's team everything will be good. But i'm not fan of football.

not Russian but I do speak Russian. From my experience people can speak a more or less sufficient English in big cities but they will be very pleased even if you put a little effort in speaking Russian.
Many people asked me about safety and crime and I can assure you that Russian cities are some of the safest I've ever seen, worst that can happen is pickpocket in crowded area, but if you're not a retarded it won't happen. More than once I found myself walking at night in non central areas and everything was fine. The western European city where I live is way more dangerous
