When you are "into" horses, the trend seems to be that one is actually a fanatic about them. You have a little naivete about it all though. They are rich people's pets and sport, and their days of being work animals are kind of over, we care about animals right a bit more than their usefulness.
I would took a look at "backcountry" type trips, Alaska, national parks, long trail rides, that kind of thing, to get your fill of them moving along with you (with others) for a few nights of little camping trip fun and trail rides. Putting your animal into a trailer, rubbing them down, grooming them, pounds of proper feed, and all that is skipped if you aren't spending the night somewhere appropriate and pre-arranged for support
