Calling all Germanfags.

Me and my girlfriend have just moved to Berlin from the UK.

Basically, neither of us speak much German, but we are learning it. We're currently renting out of an AirBnb in the south east but looking for work, experience in client/customer service.

Can anyone local or in Germany recommend types of work that might be available for a Native English speaker who speaks little German?

Why exactly have you come here? Do you know any other people in the city? It would be crucial for you to meet someone who can speak German to help you with admin related stuff. For example, you are required to reigster with the city within 10 days of moving or else you will receive a penalty.

As for jobs, Berlin has the highest unemployment rate in all of Germany. How good is your current German? The better it is, the better chance you have of being employed. At the moment I'm not too sure what kind of work you can find. Had this been during summer I could recommend plenty of summer jobs and such but because it's the middle of autumn, I'm not sure if there is much available. If you were planning on moving out of your AirBnB into a proper rental then you will face some more difficulty. Because of the migrant crisis the local government has put a large number of properties on hold for the newly arriving migrants so it puts many of us in a difficult situation.

I think we just wanted a change of scenery from the shit-stain that the UK is becoming. On top of that, we just wanted to see what it would be like to try living in another country for a bit, find work etc, see how it goes down.

I'm aware of registering with the city within 10 days, however, we're just doing a trial run for 30 days and if it works, we'll stay, if it fails, we'll leave. We're staying using Airbnb for 1 month, arrived a few days ago, so surely if it works like a hotel, we don't need to register unless we get work?

My current german is terrible, I know a few very basic phrases. I'm practicing each day though, so picking up and re-enforcing new things pretty quickly. I guess at this point, cafe/bar work would be ideal, but i'm getting the sense that despite expats telling me there's a lot of places where you don't have to speak german, that is not entirely true.

I did work freelance back in the UK, so that is one route i'm considering if I can't find some employed work.

Yeah, with rented accommodation, the whole migrant crisis thing is an absolute bitch, i'll have to play it by ear, that or we'll move somewhere else.

You might try applying for some work at a Holiday Inn. If the German ones are anything like the British ones they'll only take people on who barely speak a lick of the local language and the more foreign you look the higher your chances for employment there.

We have a number of pubs, cafes etc. in Berlin that have all-english service and menus as their gimmick. The cafe at the "Botanischer Garten" just around the corner here comes to mind. Not a bad place to have scones and tea on a sunday.

Maybe not what you're looking for in the long run but its a good place to start off while you look for other options.

I'm in a pretty similar position, I studied in Berlin for a year and fell in love with it, planning to move back in May when I finish with college. I hadn't the option of taking German classes so I have practically zero German, I can recognize certain phrases bouncers use and respond, which is all I ever needed, but that's it. I have friends who got jobs in telemarketing and with cleaning companies without any German, so maybe try that, although they got pretty sick of those jobs fairly quickly.

Just try to learn as much German as you can before you go. Most of your "education" will come from immersion anyway, as long as you make an effort to learn and don't be stubborn about it.

Germany is notoriously formal when it comes to work experience. You even need a degree to work a till.
