Have anyone ever been to Slovenia?

Me and three friends are studying abroad in Budapest, the plan is to rent a car and leave this friday for Ljubljana. I have traveled a lot through central/eastern Europe but Slovenia has always passed bellow my radar and remains uncharted.

TripAdvisor is full of interesting locations, but seeing as we are leaving on Friday morning and we only have about two and a half days to spend there, I would appreciate some input on how we can make the most of it. I would also love some general advice in terms of prices, locals, etc.

We are all in our mid 20s, love beer, wine, partying, music, architecture and history.

In that amount of time I think I'd stick to Ljubljana and probably Pirano OR Bled, depending on whether you fancy more the sea (and a charming Venetian town) or a lake (and surroundings that, while lovely, are just a bit over-touristy) or one of the two big cave complexes in the south. Or in fact just Ljubljana. if you pass near Ptuj on your route in, that might detain you for an hour or so too.

Ljubljana is a nice city to wander around, canals, the castle. Etc. The metelkova district (not far from railway station) has been kind of arty, alternative party place for a while now, there's a hostel and bar venue there that was a Yugoslav military prison.

I went there last week. This is the route we took with a hire car, obviously detouring to visit Lake Blyad as well. The Julian Alps are stunning.

We stayed one night in Kobarid, one night in Piran and had two full days in Ljubljana.

By the way, I make no exaggeration when I say Slovenia is the most beautiful country in the world.

Only gone through by car once when going to Croatia. It's 7 years ago and we didn't really stay for long anywhere. But from what I remember the nature was very pretty. really wanna go back tho

Slovenia is goddamn beautiful. I recommend visiting Bled, and also Bohinj, which is very close by (like 20 minutes by car). The Postojna Cave is a must see in my opinion, it's just an incredible place. Just incredible.

The whole country is just lush woods and beautiful moutains. Anywhere you go you can't really go wrong. Plus it's pretty small so you can go around the whole country if you have a little time. The food is really good too. With the euro it got pretty expensive though, that sort of sucks.

- Triglav National Park / the Soca valley (beautiful hikes)
- Kozjak waterfall
- Vintgar Gorge
- Vrsic Pass (mountain route by car)

Cities:
- Ljubljana
- Maribor

Caves in the south-west:
- Postojna Jama (Karst cave)
- Skocjanske Jame (Karst cave)

Coastal region:
- Piran (amazingly beautiful seaside fishing village in Venetian style)
- Koper
- Izola
- Sečovlje Salina Nature Park (salt pans)

Plus the many vinyards....

I absolutely love Slovenia. We used Camping Bled as our base for nearly everything. Nothing is more than 2 hours away. We did spend 2 additional nights in Piran because it's so beautiful. I love having fresh sardines for lunch along the boulevard while the sea hits the rocks there.

Since you'd have 2,5 days I'd say spend 1,5 in the Julian Alps and 1 in Piran with a cave visit on the way there.

Ljubljana:
- BiKoFe bar, often they have live music, good beer and chill atmosphere
- Metelkova as said, it's arty/hipster place with all types of music
- Guinness pub near Bikofe has a quite large selection of "ordinary" and craft beers from all over the world. it's somewhat expensive though..
- Vinoteka Dvor, winery, they have a good selection of local wines but it's somewhat reserved for more classy people
- Slovenian etnographic museum, cool stuff from the recent past and near Metelkova
- definately go and check the Ljubljana castle, you can see the whole city from there and it costs like 3€, pic related

The other big destination I'm sure you've heard about is Lake Bled. It's a really nice place, although I thought it was quite small and touristy. Nearby Vintgar Gorge is a must-see, and although I didn't go myself, I heard that Bohinj is similar to Bled but bigger and less touristy, so that might be worth checking out.
