By next summer's end I'm looking to move to Seattle. It'll be my first time away from home outside of leaving the house for college. Any tips or things I should look out for?

It's getting crowded here due to a booming local tech industry and lots of rich Californians moving here. We're slowly turning into another San Francisco and the gentrification over the last two decades is killing the local art and music scenes because it's too goddamn expensive for small businesses in city limits anymore.

This, completely this OP. The city is expanding the light rail north and in a couple of years the north side of the city is going to shoot up in price, pushing people like me out to Everett or Tacoma, or more than likely out of the metro completely. if you're loaded it will be great, you can love in one of the many new condos going up. otherwise don't bother.

I'm not rich, but the asking price for most nice apartments/rooms is about $800/month which I can manage.

It depends who you ask. Some people adore Seattle others despise it. it's hard to meet people if you're not part of some sort of group, the whole city can feel a bit divided at times. look up an article on the Seattle freeze, a lot of people have agreed that it's a legitimate thing. Most people are into outdoors things as well, and you'll be the odd one out if you're not down to go hiking. no real seasons here either. Doesn't snow much because of the mountains.

By the way OP, this occurs to me since $800 does seem kind of low unless you're only talking about roommate situations. if you can help it stay off Aurora and lake city when it comes to apartment hunting. Seattle is quite safe overall, but those aren't places you want to live if you can help it

I think you're looking at really shitty areas, and be aware that rents are rising so quickly that the $800 places now will probably be ~$1100 by the time you make it here.

Apart from money, google "Seattle freeze" and "Seasonal affective disorder in Seattle". Both are very very real though on the internet someone always comes out of the woodwork to deny it for whatever reason.

Well this is relative. The neighborhoods I checked are definitely better than where I live now, which is quaint and without issue. Seattle just seems to be way more progressive throughout to where in my eyes, barely any neighborhood is truly "shitty".

Yeah that's absolutely true. There's nowhere that you really have to worry about your safety within the seattle city limits, except maybe south of I-90. Around the center of the city I jog around with an iPhone on my arm every night without even thinking about it.

Damn, that's exactly what I want.

The only things keeping me from settling on Seattle is the weather possibly affecting my mood in a negative way. I guess no place can be perfect, though.

How do people handle weed being legal there? I'm from Georgia where it's super illegal so naturally I wonder about that aspect?

Weed is a non-issue. It's legal, you can smoke it, people do. There are delivery services you can text if you're 21+ and they'll deliver in 30mins. It's not a big deal at all.

I read up on it and I'm not really convinced.

I don't think most people take advantage of all there is to do in cities like Seattle. I'm a bumpkin so maybe I view things differently, but I feel that if you're out doing a diverse set of activities you have to find yourself joining some sort of group that you can hang out with.

I'm just theorizing though.
