Hey all,
Going to be travelling to Vietnam (and spending a little time in surrounding countries) in mid November. From Australia, only ever been to England. Handling money was easy in England due to the fact I had an English bank account. I'm going to be overseas for a whole month so curious what the best way to handle money will be.

When I was there last summer I found that both my (dutch) debit card and credit card worked at every single ATM. Some had a small extra charge, others didn't.
They also have ATMs pretty much everywhere, so no need to carry around lots of cash. Some ATMs are even air-conditioned.

My ATM card (on an American bank) worked almost everywhere. I did run into an ATM in HCMC that wouldn't work for me -- I thought the idiot bank jad cancelled my card "for my convenience," but turned out just to be a sketchy ATM.

Check with your bank before travel -- they may have a "sister bank" deal or something with a bank over there, which might lower ATM fees and such if you use their ATMs.

What are the gun laws in Vietnam (and Thailand)? My dad said that he was able to carry his gun on him and it saved his life a bunch of times.

Just bring a debit visa/mastercard, that will work in most of the ATMs. Your Australian card will work fine, you will even see ANZ ATMs in some tourist areas. You don't want to carry too much cash on you, anyway most ATMs have a withdrawal limit of a few million dong anyway.

It's a fun country and safe as long as you read up on the common scams and risks before you go. Most people are friendly to foreigners unless you are a dick to them first. Bargain at markets, don't leave valuables unattended, always ask the price of a service before you partake in it. Personally I don't care much for Vietnamese food but there is heaps of interesting things to try if you're into that. Chances are you will get the shits for a few days so bring some gastro-stop and take that until you're in a comfy hotel you can stay at for a few days, then stop taking it and rest up.

everyone really friendly, cheap beer, the girls don't fuck, nice countryside, cheap as shit

we just carried wads of cash, we didn't see any crime apart from conmen
since everything is SO cheap, you won't end up carrying that much at all

that being said ATM's work fine and they are fairly common

My gf backpacked through Vietnam for two months with her wearing a diamond necklace and me a $9k watch the whole way. We made no effort to avoid showing 'wads' of cash or high-crime areas. We also lost sight of our luggage more times than I care to remember.
We never got 'jacked' or even felt unsafe

That said, we never left our valuables unattended, obviously that'll just have them disappear

I'm going that time too (also Australian, Melbourne) and I've got a commbank travel card with aust dollars and just get out local currency.
If you've got time - apply for 28degrees card with no withdrawal fees / p good exchange rate. Then just pay it off every month.
Nab also have great travel cards or city bank maybe pretty sure.

I'm going for 3 weeks and have a decent itinerary- flying in 25th
Check smart traveller and you know you need a visa or to get a visa on arrival you need an acceptance letter!!

I've strolled through Ben Thanh with a big wad of cash plenty of times. I always carried around a big wad in my breast pocket because that's what the Vietnamese people were doing. Never been "jacked".

Citibank has the best card just switched from commbank travel to citibank for 3 months in europe.

Better exchange rate than all* travel cards
No withdrawal fees (only if the atm wants to charge you)
You dont have to change the currency in your account just withdraw local currency from atm wherever.

It's common knowledge the best is currently Capitol One for travelers for Europe as actual credit cards go. The better your credit/wealth, there are perks to having some of the other highest ranked other brands of course, like Platinum AMEX which gives some serious insurance and concierge bonuses just for use.

Schwab refunds anything charged to you. That's true "no fees" at any ATM in the world.

That's an option on an ATM menu, and always preferred, but not something exclusive to Citibank.

It's not bad, but there is better. I suggest a Schwab checking account, with no minimum withdrawals, no transaction fees, no any fees, just nothing but the world best checking account, giving your private banking power at any level of income.

Worst card? Probably anyone who poor credit who has a prepaid card, only a debit card, or some kind of horrible APR starter card with a high revolving balance. But worst commonly used card is probably Bank of America (aka Bank of Fees).

Can you recommend some websites for apartment rentals there and tell me how the ESL bums do. I'm thinking of going there but I'm a little put off at the idea of working 40 hours weeks with no vacation time. Trying to figure out if it's worth it or not.
