First time travelling alone

Hey trv

I've been thinking of going on a trip by myself in january but i never travelled alone before (always with family or friends). My idea is taking a cheap flight to a european city with ryanair and stay in a hostel for about 8-9 days.
destination ideas:
Lisboa, porto, rome, ...
Any recommendations? somewhere rather cheap and where i wouldnt be bored if i go alone.

I just got back from my first solo trip in China last week and had a lot of fun, so I have to recommend it. Lots and lots to see, do and eat; and all for pretty damn cheap!

sounds great and china is definitely on my list, but for january i'm looking for a destination in europe since that's where i'm from, something cheap, that is nice also in the winter

Planning to do the same here. I'll go 10 days in the south of Spain and move around.
Imo, any capital city is worth it, but you may want to move a bit and not stay more than 3/4 days in one place.

How long are you staying for? Only those 8 - 9 days? If you're staying for longer, you should look into getting an Interrail pass for travelling around. They're cheap enough, and you can find more info at interrail.eu.

I'd also highly recommend travelling alone. I prefer travelling alone or together with just one friend, as it makes it so much easier to be spontaneous and meet other people while travelling. My best advice, if you haven't already done it, is to go get an account on CouchSurfing. You don't actually need to sleep on somebody's couch, but it's the best resource for getting in touch with local people and other travelers. Most bigger cities have weekly CS meetings where you can go and get to know people who'll know what to do, and who might want to do it with you.

Oh, and general destinations: Barcelona and Lisboa are pretty cheap. Riga and most of Eastern Europe is pretty cheap, at least if you avoid the most touristy places. All of the older cities have lots of things to keep you occupied.

Just booked a first solo holiday myself for February.

Chose Venice, as there should be plenty to keep me occupied for a few days, and super touristy which should make for a straightforward first trip. Plus it was cheap, though I'm sure it'll sting the wallet while I'm there.

Looking at Barcelona or Reykjavik for later on in the year if all goes well (and I don't arrange anything else with other people in the meantime).
