I'm currently in Riga. I've been here for a week, and I have another three to use. Who better to ask than /trv/?

I'd love to hear anybody's opinion on what there is to do, everything from where the parties and the interesting bars are at, to which parsk and churches are interesting.

I'm here to improve my Russian, and if anybody has any tips in that direction, that would also be great.

And if anybody has any questions or are interested in the area, I'd love to answer as good as I can.

Good luck learning Russian, yes there is a sizeable minority but the authorities and Latvians are quite resentful of the Soviet era, and current Russian posturing in the Baltics. All the street signs are in Latvian only, for example.

As for places to go, I can heartily recommend the Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs, hidden a block or two away from your picture. Great choice of beers, and the food was both brilliant and very cheap, so good we went back twice. I had a whole leg of Pork one night, skin and everything. There was live music on too, folk and fusion jazz which is not normally my cup of tea, but it was pretty enjoyable.

I did actually go to Ala with a girl I met. Loved the place from the moment we entered. So I'd love to get more advice from you on where to go, as we apparently agree on what's good.

And I agree concerning the stag parties. I was expecting that to be something I'd see all around Riga, especially at the party street not too far from the Freedom Monument. Maybe I'll see some eventually.

Did you go to any particular museums?

Also, you can cheaply visit places in Estonia and Lithuania by coach from Riga. Have you considered even just day trips if you can't do overnight trips?

I was there just last weekend. Was better than expected. If you are looking for cheap, no thrills hotel accommodation, I can recommend Hotel Irina on Merkela street. Soviet style hotel, but cheapest in the area.

It's very near train and bus station and the old town also. There's also Subway and other bf options on the same street

If u fancy meeting other foreigners (brits mostly) go to Kiwi bar or that "fox bar" in the old town, forgot the name.
