I'm a 21 year old student from Australia planning to go on an exchange semester. Tossing up between Wisconsin USA or Norway.

I feel as though Norway has more to offer culturally but Wisconsin has the infamous American college experience.

Any advice/insight or similar experiences?

You know what, I'm going to say go with Wisconsin. The UW system are good universities. Assuming you'd be going to UW Madison, you'd be near Chicago and Milwaukee for cultural stuff (concerts, museums, pro sporting events, etc.) and Madison itself has plenty to offer a 21 year old. If Wisconsin is anything like Michigan you'd be surrounded by some beautiful forests, lakes, and farmlands within a short drive if you need a nature fix. And, depending on the time of year, you'd have Lake Michigan to satisfy all your beach going needs.

Unless you're really into Norway, then disregard.

I know this may offend some Norwegians, but I am sorry. Norway doesn't have a culture. At least in Tromdheim, a big college town. HAD a culture, maybe. But doesn't HAVE one. Maybe it's the Viking thing of stealing other people's cultures, but there was a little I saw there that was distinctly Norwegian. Even the cathedral and such was more vaguely "European". I expected to hear death metal on the radio, it was all American pop. I saw African braiding shops, Irish pubs, and burger kings. There was British pubs, and Italian restaurants represented to. But I saw nothing that felt distinctly Norwegian outside of the nature and countryside. All the souvenirs I saw fell into 3 stereotypes, trolls, vikings, Norwegian flag.
