I'll be able to save up around $2000 and it seems like Japan is gonna be too expensive. My heart is set on Japan but if it is too expensive I'm gonna have to settle for Sri Lanka. What do you guys think? Is Japan possible in my budget? Want to visit Tokyo, Kyoto and Yakushima forest. Plus Japanese women > Sri Lankan women.

I went to japan for 17 nights for roughly $4000 for everything. From (AUS) Stayed in Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima,Kyoto. and spent 3 days skiing.
A rail pass (JR) was really good if you plan on traveling on bullet trains, not worth it if you only use it once though.
Also stayed at Kobayashi near mt fuji and that was really nice.

How much was the total cost for the tickets? and would you say your accommodations were budget accommodations or were you staying in 3star above hotels? Do you think $ 2k would be enough for a week long trip? I won't be doing any skiing or anything like that. Just travel and food.

Is there some reason you can't google any of this? What you're asking is hardly unusual.

You can stay in 1- or 2-star business hotels for $50/night in most cities. Cheaper options (hostels, capsule hotels, etc.) exist. You can eat fairly well on $30/day; toss in another $10/day if you drink alcohol. A 7-day rail pass is $250. So, there you go -- $810 for a week in Japan if you don't buy alcohol, $880 for a week if you do. That leaves you $1100 or $1200 for shopping or any other indulgences you care to try. BTW, I hear Sri Lanka is absolutely overrun with Chinese package tourists these days.

Go get some airfare. When other people fly there, they will be paying differently than you. Set up a "fare watch" if it seems you can't get a good fare for that city right now.
Price the train on the train website. or however else you plan to get around inside your 3 cities. Bus or whatever.
Book online hotels day 1, day 2, day 3....
Decide if you have enough to eat on left, and other incidentals.
Do math. Figure out, uh oh, not enough money. This usually happens once you do the above, even before meals, you have a decent idea. So then either shorten your trip to do it anyway, decide if that's even worth it right now if airfares is biggest expense, stay in one place once there, or get out of the most expensive city you land in as fast as possible..., or....go somewhere else that is more offseason.
This strategy also finds those expensive weeks where there is a convention, festival or holiday going on, and the city is packed and no cheap hotels, if any left.

Nope, never travelled alone before. Just got a job that pays well enough and want to save up for a trip. Okay seems like $2000 should be enough for a decent trip. Thanks for your help.

Seems to me $2k should be enough just for airfare. For a week in an expensive city, internationally speaking, and being a novice traveler, you might _want_ to spend only 2k, but if you don't get airfare less than $800, you usually cant do a week there right, imho.
Save 4k for the 2k budget, and at least have that in savings to back you up. If I had only 2k, I'd be looking for cheap locations, maybe a Budapest kind of idea, or some American mid-size town that has competition among hotels, or was offseason or a lot of empty B&Bs.
