International Mail

Anybody here have experience shipping letters internationally? The most obvious answer is USPS First-Class Mail International, but it's incredibly slow. I'm willing to pay a premium for a bit more speed and reliability, but I don't want to drop $38 for a 1 ounce letter. I saw that Fedex and UPS offer better mail services, but it looks like they only do bulk business mailing.

I Googled it to no avail. Am I stuck with USPS?

USPS First Class is the best option if you dont want to spend $30-$40. Priority Mail Express will only take a few days depending on the location but it cost around $40. Standard Priority Mail will just help it get out of the country faster for around $25. UPS/FedEX/DHL etc are pretty much out of the question for a simple letter. It will be very expensive.

For many developed countries you can ship it as a package at a post office and get a tracking number for $7.

Any major carrier you choose is going to just hand it off the the local post office in that country anyways, you don't actually think USPS and UPS have routes and schedules in China, Russia, etc right? Especially for a letter, UPS might deliver a package if it's in a major international city but USPS wouldn't ever.

DHL is one of the largest export carriers in the world though, they specialize in export shipping. Actually off the top off my head I can name 3 export shipping companies, but thats because I work in a transportation department

Isn't DHL better than other options internationally? I'm guessing OP that it's going to be that one carrier is better for you and not for others depending where you want this letter to go.

It is but it's more expensive. USPS Priority Mail is less than a week to most places. The rub is how good that countries mail is once it gets there.

DHL is the best for international but also the most expensive. I'd follow with UPS, then Fed Ex for packages. I think Fed EX may do letters as well.

USPS is by far the best value. Cool loop hole, if you know someone there, as far as cost, is use USPS to mail to APOE/FPOE and the cost is the same as mailing domestic. Then have someone mail it last leg or deliver it for you, if it's close enough. I work for the US government so I have a network of people across the world and have used this in more than one country to get things delivered to civilians. Also helps when abroad and getting things mailed back to the USA cheaply
