My mother and myself want to relocate to Santa Fe New Mexico. She has a bachelors in Business and I have an associates degree, and am in business school.

How do you get hired for a job before moving to the city? Is it best to just send out online applications and do a Skype interview?

Also, does anybody have anything to say about Santa Fe? Or New Mexico in general?

Northern NM is pretty amazing but most jobs are in the tourism industry. What sort of work experience do you guys have? What industries are you interested in?

My mother does a lot of administrative type stuff. We're only interested in Santa Fe because there are a TON of state job openings there. Indeed says theres 1,500 job listings in that tiny town of 60,000.

We're coming from Chicago though. How hard is it to get hired from halfway across the country?

And I agree, Northern NM is probably the most beautiful place I've seen on this planet.

My dad is from northeastern New Mexico-his people were ranchers. Still have a few redneck cowboy relatives. Santa Fe is gorgeous and has fascinating history--it is among the oldest continously-inhabited places in the Americas, as you may know. But I'm surprised to see that it's got so many jobs--it's a little place and seemed pretty dependent on tourism (art galleries, hotels, etc.). NM was described to me (by a dude at the Albuquerque airport) as "a poverty state," perhaps because of the high population of underemployed natives. Albuquerque, as you likely know, is larger, cheaper in terms of cost of living, and not a long commute on New Mexico's insanely fast highways.

Southern NM is dirt poor. Northeaster NM is fucking untamed and awesome but lonely as hell.
The rio grande corridor is full of some of the wealthiest people on the planet. Many movie stars and fortune 500 types.
Huge amount of government jobs mostly due to LANL . Los Alamos is the highest per capita paid zip code in the country( not richest but most money for actual work) and the highest concentration of PHDs.
This sucks out all the viable candidates for gov jobs in other sectors.

Wow okay. So is it pretty much impossible to get hired in the Santa Fe area for a government job? I see that they have like hundreds of openings for government positions and the only requirement is a bachelors degree.

Just for anywhere in general. Do you call up a company and explain your situation, how you want a job before you move out to wherever, and do phone interviews, or what? Visit the city and hand out resumes while staying at a hotel and go house/apartment hunting?
Basically, how do you relocate yourself to a new city, perhaps in a different state?

Your reading comprehension is terrible.
The opposite is true. LANL takes all the best candidates and Santa Fe is left with no workers.
Yes, government jobs are easy to get in Santa Fe NM. There is a huge lack of talent.
There are plenty of well educated artist types but they would rather starve than take a job with the state.

If anybody else has any insight on living in Santa Fe, I'd like to hear more. I visited Santa Fe once a few years ago and thought it was the coolest place I'd ever been in my life. I hiked/explored all the amazing mountains and desert lands for a week.

I work for the US Government in SW Georgia. My section is conducting intereviews right now matter of fact. Government jobs will do telephone interviews, even if the job doesn't pay for relocation, if you are willing to relocate for it. Just apply on USAjobs.gov
