I was interested in taking that on, but I'm not sure what all of that entails. The legalities and all, sounds interesting but I am hesitant.

The legalities entirely depend on where you want to go.

For example, doing America or Canada from a camper, van or even truck is entirely possible. But in Europe it'd be more difficulty due to the different laws in different countries. In Africa it's basically a desperate plea to be brutally murdered (in some countries anyway).

In the US I've always gone with motels, guesthouses etc. But a friend of mine traveled through California, Utah, Nevada and Arizona eariler this year in a camper van. He had a blast with it and no problems at all.

Camper, or car?

You can usually stay up to 24 hours in a walmart parking lot. A safer option is a lot of casinos let you stay 12 hours in theirs. If you can actually sleep in your car, you can do that, then just go to community centers to shower.

There's a conundrum in expense and comfort. It could seem like you're paying a lot for gas if you're just one person. But if there's multiple people, sleeping in a car doesn't work well.

Where do you want to go? Consider getting a multi use Amtrak pass?

Car, I'll look into guest houses and motels, but I was going with the notion that it might as well be better (expense wise) to just sleep in the car.

Not sure yet, I do want to travel up the coast of CA to Canada, but at first probably just farther NorCal than LA, San Fran area is appealing, but I dunno yet.
I haven't checked the multi Amtrak pass, I was under the impression that they didn't travel that far north.

I spent 3 months in a Ford falcon wagon travelling around the coast Australia (Cairns clockwise around to Perth). Great experience but would recommend a different more spacious vehicle. Our biggest problem was the humidity of north queensland. Had to shorten our stay there as we just couldnt get a decent night of sleep.

Met some amazing people along the way and I will do it again in europe and north america

Look into a tent and a good air mattress. In the western US, there's a bunch of national parks that you can camp in. Might be a little late in the year for it though.

Where did you park your car when it was time to bunker down? I'm accustomed to stricter laws about parking your car through the night.

I have the tent, but not yet the money. That is something I haven't thought of, but I've experienced incredibly expensive park ground prices. Might be worth it for one night booked in advance.
Take note, I am considering a trip in which I don't stay in one place for longer than a day or two.

It differed a lot from where in Australia. Most tourist-heavy places had bans on camping outside of caravanparks. Out on the country-side they often provided free campgrounds with showers and all. We went about by asking all the other backpackers and grey nomads we met for tips. We found it best to find a nice place to camp and stay about a week. During which you can do little trips and actually get a feel for the town/area. Its easy to get stuck trying to get somewhere new all the time when on a trip like that
