I wanted to create a thread where anons could share their experience of any times where they were able to travel for free or at a very low cost, maybe as a result of some sort of work placement or programme. Other than that I want to keep it pretty general, and hopefully it can help to inspire some ideas in anons who want to travel, but don't have a huge amount of money to spare.

I'll start. Both of mine are pretty specific to the UK.

ICS placement:

This is a governement-funded programme which supports volunteer placements in Africa, Asia and South America. If you were funding it yourself it would cost about eight grand, but they'll pay that all for you as long as you can fundraise eight-hundred or fifteen-hundred pounds (depending on your level of income). It's very easy to get accepted on the programme.

I'm pretty cynical and don't actually see the benefit of this sort of volunteering, and I was worried that my group would be full of SJW types. Luckily it wasn't, and I had a great time. There was a little bit of feelgood factor about the volunteering, although we could have done far more, and the workload was really light. The best bit was the cultural exchange. Obviously you have to be comfortable putting aside your home comforts if you're going to be living in a third-world country, but you really get to immerse yourself in a completely different culture, and make genuine friendships with people from that culture. If that sort of travel appeals to you, this programme is a great way to spend 10 weeks (and it will also make your mum proud of you because she thinks you're making a genuine difference in a poverty-stricken country, rather than just enjoying a free holiday in the sun).

Camp America:

I actually worked at a camp in Canada, but programmes in America are far more common and well-known. The hours are very long, the pay is ridiculously shitty (I worked it out and I was on a little less than a pound per hour and made a loss of a few hundred pounds overall), but I also had the best summer I can remember. It helped that I had a genuinely good boss though, so this might differ depending on the placement. Again, it's pretty easy to get accepted so long as you can feign a bit of optimism in the interview and pretend you actually enjoy working with children.

If you really hate children then you might have a shit time because you'll sped pretty much all of your time with them. However the job is what you make of it, and is pretty relaxed and fun for most of the time. My camp gave us weekends off and also a week off in the middle of summer, so we used this time to unwind and get drunk, but also to travel to some really cool locations. Even if you don't get this, you'll definitely have time to travel before/after camp. I made some good friends with the people I worked with, and was so glad I did it because it allowed me to experience a huge amount of what Canada has to offer at a fraction of the price. So for anyone who wants to go to North America and doesn't mind working with children, I'd definitely recommend it.

Working remote for a company back home. Though when one can't say no to endless nights out it becomes hard to focus on work—essentially now just work M-F in Singapore or HK and spend w/es or when I want a break backpacking asia/oceania.

US military has sent me all over the world, funded. Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Bahrain, Jordan, UAE, Norway, Italy, Japan, Qatar and in the USA, Florida, NC, DC, California, SC, Virginia, and Georgia. Trips as short as 3 days one end, to as long as 7 months on the other. I've been in for over 15 years in a logistics job. Some of the trips were related to that, others completely unrelated, like when I was tasked out to an IG inspection team as inspector ensuring units compliance with orders.

I once had a 9 month all expenses paid walking tour of Afghanistan. Also a 1 month Persian language course in Tehran that was all paid for by the government, I just had to pay for flights there and back.

Not that guy, but the Peace Corps is great, but you can't be a NEET you have to have an education or skill needed. There is a volunteer organization General Petraeus started for former military that'slike disaster and developing country relief, and I believethe pay travel and you get a stipend. I can't recall the name.

If you're American, seriously look into exchange programs. My university really wants to increase the number of students they send abroad. I'm in Singapore right now and got $4K in scholarships to do it. As an American, you can probably exchange most places at your first pick, since so few Americans exchange compared to everyone else.

3 trips, 2 times Germany, 1 time France to go to a conference. Also spent a month in Tokyo where I could do some work remotely while travelling. Been only doing this job for a little over half a year though so I'm hoping to get more traveling opportunities (next one should be in Spring to New York)

A friend of mine also works for a starcraft team as one of their PR guy kind of and he got to travel to Germany, France, Taiwan and the US this year.
