Not sure if it's considered circlejerky to praise PT Anderson, but if it is I don't care. I'm a huge fan of his films, and I get such a great feeling when I watch them.

One thing I have noticed about a few of his films (Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Hard Eight, Punch Drunk Love) is that there are very obvious (or maybe just impactful) rising and falling actions. Not that they're tasteless, but rather than using them as a guideline, the rise and climax are integral and powerful points of the story.

In Magnolia especially, I've noticed it. When the game show starts turning to hell, Officer Kurring loses his gun, Phil is losing his cool at the Partridge home, Frank is being bombarded by his interviewer, etc I get this real sense of dread from it all. A lot of movies try to make for dramatic and impactful climaxes, but I swear I get tense every time I watching these films. I guess I don't have much of a point, I just really enjoy how well PT Anderson can build drama that I actually care about and am effected by, spiraling out of control on the movie roller coaster.
