I think Pizza was toeing into some dangers waters. Especially after the true big bads of Season 1 being a Governor turned Senator who was basically running a giant child molestation and ritual sacrifice cult, with a vast network of corruption spreading out across the whole state. Then there's all the symbolism that's been discussed since, the blue spiral being linked with the FBI, NASA and real world pedophiles, not to mention all the spoopy child molestation Satanic crap that actually did go down in Louisiana.
The second season seemed to be just as primed to look beyond the veil. And then out of no where, like a month before the series premiers, he comes out real low key saying that they've abandoned a lot of the occult shit he talked about earlier. I think someone at HBO was putting pressure on him to change it up.
