Avatar is a film that gets a lot of undeserved hate. I think it's a great movie, and I hate seeing all the complaints about it. Avatar is one of the most beautiful movies out there. Cameron creates such a spectacular world, everything is so detailed, and feels so well thought out, that even though it’s the most unrealistic thing probably ever made, it feels life like, and we get wrapped up in it’s wonder. It’s impossible to not be absolutely entranced by the visuals. Everything is just spectacular, from the production design, to the smooth looking visual effects, to the cinematography. It’s a visual feast of the highest order, and even now five years later, still looks ground breaking. I also loved the script. It’s packed with great one-liners and some really good subtle themes. As well, the way the plot progresses and builds up is masterful. It’s such a creative and original movie, in every way. The music is great as well, James Horner’s work, while not iconic, or memorable outside the film, fits the material perfectly. Saying that it’s a bad movie because “pocahontas/fern gully in space” is not valid. For one, the story barely resembles either of those films. I don’t remember Pocahontas having someone who needed to be assimilated into the culture as his duty, wasn’t that character just visiting the village because he wanted to see the girl? And Fern Gully also barely shares a resemblance other than forest destruction. If that’s why Avatar is Fern Gully in space, then I guess you could also say that Princess Mononoke is Fern Gully in Japan. Besides, does Avatar sharing some plot points with other films really make it a bad movie? You don’t see people discrediting The Lion King because it was an unoriginal rip off of Hamlet. Avatar takes some familiar story points, and tells a new story with it, and creates an entirely new, amazing world to do it. It’s one of the most original, beautiful, and spellbinding movies of the last ten years.
