Was Babadook really supposed to be a horror film?

Granted it did have some mildly creepy imagery, but I thought it was supposed to be a dark comedy.

If it wasn't supposed to be comedic, then why the fuck did they keep the babadook in the basement and feed it worms at the end?

The critics misjudged this one greatly. Anything with a fairly low budget, made in some obscure neck of the woods and avoids being digital sludge, is lorded as the next greatest yadda yadda - It was okay, not terrifying though... If anything it's depiction of child rearing is enough to make one pallid.

I agree, but thought it was more of a dark relationship drama. The first half of the movie, where the kid was being a fucking freak, and then the mum started being really horrible and uncaring, were far scarier to me than the second half.

Did anyone else read the Babadook as a metaphor for her depression at her husbands death? Something she needed to confront, but could never get rid of altogether.

Seriously though, from what I saw of the snippets of people talking about this movie on here like it was the scariest film to date.. What.. the.. fuck..

I saw the cartoon book image of the babadook and yeah it looked scary, i thought that was going to be in the movie as a some creepy thing peeping round corners..

But no... you literally see it as a fucking fag in a cosplay costume with stupid effects once..

its not scary at all.. nothings happens till the very end.. the only scene worth watching was the mam about to fingerblast herself and then the kid interupts her..
