the first darkside users were not sith, they were jedi who wanted to create life from the force. they fought the jedi and the republic, but were defeated. for some reason (???) instead of killing them, they banished them to uncharted space, where they settled on korriban.
then the dark jedi interbred with the native species, the sith (dark red skin, weird face tendrils), until they were a new species of darkside force wielding badasses
that dumb comic picture is from when they had remained on korriban for like a thousand years or more, building a huge empire.
eventually they were defeated until the events of the old republic, when the immortal sith emperor vitiae built another sith empire centered around ziost and dromund kaas. that sith empire retook korriban and the events of the old republic take place.
THEN that sith empire dies out around 2000 years before the movie. there's another weaker sith empire at that point that the dude that made THE RULE OF TWO took over and destroyed, creating the sith we know today.
