3.I think you can use terms out of their context and time, as long as you keep clear its just an analogy. To say "Bosch was a surrealist" is fine as a mere example. Otherwise history of art would be impossible.
But it can create a mess really fast, like when people say bowlshit like "the chinese are baroque" or "japanese are minimalist".
And yes, etnography is a stupid term. Would you indentify Quentin Tarantino work as "ethinical"?? I doubt.
