I always thought that the obvious evolution from the slasher movie the first one was to the vietnam movie the second was would be a full on invasion/outbreak movie. Set it on a Blade Runner-y, Avatar-ish cyberpunk earth, have some LAPD detectives investigating what they think is some kind of gang that's abducting people from night clubs, turns out to be xenomorphs, and the story basically unfolds from there.
