Pretty much look at what Jackie Chan does for his films. he's a perfectionist who (at least when he could still do most of his own stunts), always made fights perfectly clear and never any shaky cam BS. Also having creativity with his weapons.

watch vid, is amazing how well it details what jackie does that american directors just dont. look at the shanty town car scene from police story than watch michael bay's version in bad boys 2, BIG DIFFERENCE

that video is stupid, it's talking about action comedy. and Bay does direct action movies well, see bad boys 1 and 2, the rock, the island.
a good action movie should have an enjoyable lead who doesnt take himself too seriously (like arnold in predator or commando), great set pieces, and isn't afraid to mix character growth in between action sequences

Realistic fight sequences, none of that 'guy stands waiting for his buddy to fight, then takes his chance' bullshit. Action movies that do less are better than the ones that push it to the max. Watching some ultimate fighter wannabe take on a horde of bad guy ninjas is fucking retarded. There is no way anyone would be able to stand up to that, barring a supernatural explanation. Taken was great because every fight/gun sequence was believable, and Liam Neeson proved he can kick ass in an action flick. Outside of realistic action, it also helps to have believable motivation behind the fights, not just evil vs good bullshit.

The Rock was only redeemable because of Connery. Without him all you have is a B+ Nicolas Cage movie (B+ to differentiate between his worse recent B movies).

The Island has a good concept, but fails horribly in the second act. It's the type of movie that really should have used less action to create more suspense rather than all the ridiculous scenes they mashed into it.

Bad Boys 1 and 2. I never could get through either of them so I guess no comment.
