But in more serious terms, it was a refutation of the narcissism inherent in the attitudes of a lot of "tolerant" white people; the idea that colored people are so dependent upon and defined by their treatment by white people that a white person's rejection of racism could somehow redeem the criminal element among minorities.

The protagonist went through this whole transformative abandonment of racism, but then his bro got killed by blacks over some petty shit because it doesn't matter that he turned into a libfag.

Well the guys he shot he could claim self defence, since they were armed and stealing his property. The one he gutterstomped was clearly excessive, so he was never gonna get off scot free, but because there were no witnesses they couldn't prove Edward Norton outright did it not in self defence.

When his brother is writing the essay for the black teacher he writes that if he testified Edward Norton would have got life.

Supposedly, the first draft of the screenplay called for the final scene to be his character shaving his head again. Studio objected that it was too controversial, but it would have made the message a lot more clear.
