The pairing tag didn't exist back then but the character tags did, so you just have to wade through the muck for the femslash. But back in the day I mostly found good fic through livejournal - stumble across one good writer and then check out their peers. The better ones tended to gravitate towards each other, but they also moved on to different games/fandoms. I have no idea how the ff7 fandom is now though, from what I can tell it's mostly fujoshi central.
