Thanks anon! Lighting is definitely the biggest issue. You can see how trying to level it to make it look nice leaves the bottom-left corner still really dark even though the center is white. Whatever the tone/quality of the image is, it's better if it's consistent, so lighting is important. Maybe using a flash would help?

It probably says a lot about the rubbish taste of those who admire Takotsuboya's 2edgy "plots" and model their own writing after it. Plus, Takotsuboya's overwrought edginess is a turnoff to the ones it's directed at, namely the respective fandoms of the original works.

CGDCT stories seem easy at first glance, but when it comes to actually doing them... Drama and "dwama" are the easy ones. Just pile on the horrible stuff and suffering and poof, instant following. Even if it's ridiculous as all get out.

Chika's seiyu- Anju sings the OP of Love Don Quixote. It's a situation cd involving the MC against the wall with the bloke's arms on one or either side of the MC (self-insert).

I would call it 'pinned against the wall' but in Japanese slang, this situation is called Kabe Don.

Tragedy is easier to write, but there's nothing really hard about writing slice of life. You just need a theme and run with it. Fanfiction fails miserably at it because these "writers" really suck at writing. They try to do comedy and they don't know how to be funny, or write about things they don't know shit about or use a stupid song as the basis for the story.

I'm on the camp that any writer that really wants to write should stay miles away from fanfiction. Reading it or creating it will make you a shitty writer.

It can help you to get better at redacting, and maybe at understanding pacing, but beyond that, nothing much. The most important part when you are crafting a story is the creation of the characters. Fanfiction allows you to skip this part.

This is only partially accurate.

With fanfiction, the audience is to some degree familiar with the source material. If the writer doesn't know their stuff and portrays characters OOCly, they can and will be laughed at and/or treated with disdain. It's not merely about having technical ability in writing, but also knowing the characters as they were in canon. A wimpy Nozomi or flirtatious Umi won't fly because readers know that is not how they are. For OCs, which is also one cause for OCs not being welcome in many circles, the creator can just pull some contrived nonsense out their ass, and everyone is left to do nothing but shrug and accept it or drop the story. Even for published or airing works, OOC behavior will be frowned upon when a writer doesn't understand the characters. Just see the comics thread or venture over to /co/.

What you're saying in no way contradicts what I'm saying. Writing fanfiction is bad for you, as a writer, because you don't have to create the characters, they are already there you just have to build from there. You can't go OOC and "original characters" are often, correctly, dismissed as self-inserts.

If you want to go professional fanficition is the worst school you could have. You just have to look a the woman behind 50 Shades of Grey to see what I'm talking about.

Terrible writers exist independently of shitty fanfiction, just like terrible artists exist indecently of shitty fanart. Fanfiction is simply more popular than original fiction on the Internet, hence why so many people try their hand at it and why it's gotten the reputation that it has. There is nothing inherently wrong with fanfiction from a writing standpoint.

Eh. If people think the work is well-written and it's an interesting premise people seem fine with ignoring that. Just go look at some of jstonedd's stuff. Or AdrenaVeris in K-ON who did the most popular fic in the fandom and Ritsu and Mio were just completely and utterly different.

Go to any class/workshop about writing and see for yourself what is the matter which receives the majority of the focus: Characters. Coming up with premises or stories is easy. Filling those stories with interesting and well developed characters it isn't. You're right in that there are terrible writers that have never veered upon the fanfiction world, but I dare you to show a modern good writer that did fanfiction in is youth.

Isn't it a little extreme to claim that anyone who has ever written fanfiction is incapable of becoming a good writer? Besides, tons of respected established writers have written published fanfics, especially about Sherlock Holmes and the Cthulhu Mythos. Neil Gaiman managed to combine both in a short story.
