LUG did some pretty based things. The whole Ruin of Midgard and Dammenrug (Or wathever it is the german name of that "Twillight of Midgard" event) Roleplaying events were extremely cool.

But yeah they went full retarded with the cash shop after a while, and had some pretty shit customer support.

FFXI was entirely willing to create content gates hard enough to keep out the vast majority of their crap players.
It punished bad players for being bad, hard. So even as pure PvE it avoided being a pleb-tier game.
