No it's been re-conned that he's one of Bowser's relatives, He's been referred to as such in various Mario games and even works for Bowser in one of the Mario and Sonic titles.

At least Koopalings in MK8 was cool.

The problem with that game's roster was the lack of returning vets, 5 babies, 2 metal recolors, and re-skins for DLC.

The ones in NSMB3 and NSMBU (with spiked shells) are a species.

The non-spiked Boom Boom and Pom Pom in 3D Land/World are individual characters. And Pom Pom even has a description of her personality in the booklet included with the official 3D World soundtrack discs.

She's the one who tries to be classy and refined, but is actually just as short-tempered as her brother/whatever.

I had a feeling from the first announcement this was gonna be a rushed out quick cash grab of a game. I really would like a new Mario Tennis but I'm not gonna settle for barebones garbage with little options for online play.

NSMB pandering, it's about as creative as Nintendo can get with Mario nowadays.
I'd rather Jr. had a paintbrush moveset, but for what it's worth, he's very fun in Smash, moreso than Blue Peach imo. Just kinda wished that it's not an excuse to be lazy in Mario.
