They start you off with the turtle, the bird, the caterpiller, the rock snake, and THEN they throw the Jinxes and Misdrevouses at you. And even then, when Pokemon does draw inspiration from real-life myth and legend, it's not exclusively Japanese. X and Y's legendaries are based off of Norse mythology, for example. Lucario is based off of Egyptian mythology. Pokemon is a lot more global by design.
Youkai Watch is, comparatively speaking, a lot more one-note, and it just kinda throws that stuff at you from the word go. It's even in the fucking title.
